Not so new to Geneva anymore, but still feeling like a total outsider!

So, one year passed since I arrived to Geneva and I still feel like I arrived yesterday. It's been a tough time for me, since I can't seem to be able to socialize with people here. Not that I'm the most easy going person I know, but still... I'm not the typical wine-after-work type of girl and I know I'm too quiet for my own good. So, if something catches your attention, feel free to reply.

Get a dog - go to the park with your dog - there is a whole community of dog lovers there. I have been made very welcome like this....

Marta... i think the priority is to get rid of the feeling that you are unable and won;t be able to socialize... Encourage yourself first.

Try to go out more often, there's some good occasion to meet people on here.

Hey Marta,

I think you would feel more like yourself when you do your own thing. Try to be the "old" you, from the time before you have moved here. What were the things that you were usually doing after work if not catching up with friends and having a cocktail?

join the gym, look for a tennis partner, for a bike ride partner, swim partner ?

this website gives you sooooooo many opportunities I feel like you've spent the last year hiding in your room.

there is a lot of different people in the area, some are more into going out, having drinks and enjoying time with friends. There are also people, that appreciate quiet and for example a good book with a hot cacao :)

If you wont try to make yourself happy, your stay in Geneva will feel weird for another year ;)

"There are also people, that appreciate quiet and for example a good book with a hot cacao :) "

Think about that only between circa mid oct to mid November, when lakes are colder and not a lot of snow out there to ski yet....

Still time for hike, bike, swim, museum, shows, conferences, friends, sightseeing, meeting people from all over the world and learn about them and their culture.... well, to summarise it, glocals' activites and events.

Why don't you start by saying how you want to meet peole or how you met them in the past  and then see if there any people who want to meet in the same way.

The great thing about this website is that you can propose anything you might think others will enjoy.

And by the way you can drink orange juice after work as well.

Good luck

Sorry to hear that  Marta, it's hard I know. Do you go home much?

Even people who have moved with a wife/husband here find it tough.

I think the Swiss are very hard to get to know, and so I think you're best bet is to socialise with other ex pats, have you tried 'Internations' ?

Are you able to help out with local charity work?  As someone else said here, have you thought about getting a dog? I wish you well  xxxx

To get back to the original subject, if you're one of the many expats who don't speak French, I can recommend learning the local language as the best way of integrating. There may be a large expat community here, but you're missing out on a lot of the fun if you don't participate in French-speaking activities.

Marta - checking your profile, I see you have one friend. I don't have any and am perfectly happy.

Not being able to see your profile, I can make no sensible suggestion

Marta:

Do you work here?  If so, where and what do you do?  Why did you choose the job?  What, if anything, would you rather do instead?

What do you like to do in your spare time?

If you really don't like it here, why don't you move back to where you came from or on to new pasturees?

And lastly, have you had a medical chekc-up recently?

If you want things to happens, you have to get up and set the wheels in motion -- now, today, not tomorrow.  Today is the beginning of the rest of your life.

We look forward to the first instalment of your progress report.
