Possible move to Zurich

Hi Everyone!

I am considering a postition in Zurich and would be moving from the U.S. I have lived in Africa before so culture shock won't be an issue for me. Essentially am looking for information on Zurich to help me with my decision such as cost of living, would it be difficult to live there only with knowledge of English and French, what to ask for in negotiations?

Any tips would be appreciated especially from expats :) SN: I love this site already.

Hi Tina,

the cost of living here is quite high in comparison with other countries. However the salaries here are also quite high in comparison. Zurich is a great city to live in with a very diverse culture, and lots of things to do here. Plenty of entertainment in the evenings, and all kinds of clubs to join. The ex pat community is very large , so no need to speak anything else other than English for entertainment. Your French would come in Handy in the southern part of the country. However for finding work it would be a great advantage if you spoke German. It can be quite difficult to get work without it, that said it would entirely depend on the type of work your looking for .

hope this helps

Hello Tina

Having lived for 6 years in Kanton Zürich, my maxim would be "think of a number and double it" with regard to the cost of living and housing. That said, of course the salaries are probably the best in Europe so it's swings and roundabouts. When I first arrived, I could not believe the prices [gasped] but unfortunately or fortunately as the case may be, one becomes used to them eventually. Good luck.

Hi Karl, Thanks for the response. I have managed to go this long without learning German lol. I appreciate the insight provided.
