Salut Geneve!

Hello everyone!  I'm Johnathan.  I'm not in Geneva yet, but will be moving there in early January.  I'm from the United States, but I have been living abroad for the past 10 years.  I'm a lawyer by training and have spent most of my international career working on issues related to the prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity cases.  I'm actually in Iraq now finishing up a three-year posting as the head of an international organization that specializes in finding and identifying missing persons through the use of DNA.  While I'm in Geneva, I'll be studying French at one of the French institutes, working on some publications and getting involved with the human rights community.

It's been a long time since I could go out without an army of armed bodyguards, so I plan to spend as much time outside as possible.  Besides anything related to international criminal, human rights and humanitarian law, If anyone is up for skiing, jogging, hiking or generally enjoying Mother Nature, please let me know!  Oh, I'm also a sucker for great live music, bar hopping and good food, so if you want a jolly booze buddy, I'm your man!

Welcome Mack and thanks for introducing yourself. Your comment really struck me: "It's been a long time since I could go out without an army of armed bodyguards".

So hope you won't find Geneva boring then Innocent

I've heard a few people say that Geneva is somewhat boring, but having lived down here for so long, I am more than happy to trade the danger-induced excitement of a day in Baghdad for the more subtle and sublime pleasures of Geneva.  I'm also hopeful that several people on glocals will be happy to lead me down the right path Cool

I agree with what you heard about Genova...it's a very very very quiet town...

I come from Paris and i'm used to leave in a busy environment...so it's quite different...But if you like nature and sport activity, it's just so great !!!! And peaceful!

I hope you'll enjoy it !!

you're in the good place to improve your english...

You're actually not the first to confound Geneva and Genova,  British aviators, on their way back from Italy, did it during the WW 2...  for our displeasure...

No worries Stephanie, I hear Genova (we call it Genoa in the US) is pretty quiet as well Cool.  Maybe glocals can arrange a pub crawl there and Paul D can show us how to party Liguria style!

Seriously, thanks to all of you for commenting.  I'm really looking forward to getting back to Geneva (which will be in a couple of short weeks).  Nature and healthy living aside, I did have some fun the last few times I was there, so I'm looking forward to attending lots of glocals events!  I've heard that one of the places I really enjoyed when I was there, Alhambar is closed for renovations.  So I'd really be interested to know about the current hot spots.  Any recommendations??

Guys,

I will also move to Geneva on Jan from London. I do banking and I also heard that Geneva is a quiet and boring place. Also I believe that small places has its own charm and warming community life. I would like to be social and attend meetings as possible so glad to meet you all.Any outdoor sport activity is welcome.

yeah. mainly Carouge, Plainpalais and Champel. they killed 4 persons and made several wounded.

if you understand french : http://www.pionnair-ge.com/spip1/spip.php?article31

But it was *nothing* compared to the swiss-germans towns.

Switzerland was bombarded by both sides and swiss army planes even had  *dogfights* with german planes.
