This is probably an old thread, but I just did a quick search for Lugano.
I work in Lugano and frequently get out to climb, bike, run etc... in the local area. I would recommend the local Via Ferrata if you are interested in climbing. The road riding (bikes) is exceptional with several "destination rides" as our everyday excursions.
There are also quite a few local hikes and day trips that are worth exploring.
