Unless electricity just started walking, it's not lightning fast... Not for me anyway. Sorry Oded.

Yo E
We eliminated some queries, imrpoved some queries, and tweeked the cache and the indexes.
But I think there is something more happening here.
Last night the site was very fast too, and then during the day it got really slow.
So I hope what we did solved the main issues, and that the site will stay fast, but I have a feeling we'll see another slowdown tomorrow .

Do you use an in-memory database (like memcached) to handle queries created by hits on
the website? if you hit the database everytime somebody loads some page (maybe multiple
times even), that's bad.You should run the site through Firefox YSlow module and see
what you can improve. Also, the site shows a large latency (that's what people
refer to it being "slow", the time before the first byte is sent after a request should be in the
low double-digit milliseconds range). You should serve all the images, css, js -
any static content - via a specialized webserver like NGINX (easily done using a special
sub-domain).Ideally, you would create semi-static pages of most content and
serve that also via NGINX.
Tuning your on-disk database will not
yield enough perfomance-gains to let the site run "fluid", I'm afraid.On-disk
databases introduce too much latency - and latency kills user-
experience.
Running high-performance dynamic websites is not
easy...
