You need to take some action to ensure you maintain your current GoL 'Friends List'. Here's the story:
On Monday Sept 18th we will launch GoL's new Friends Network function, to ensure (per the community's feedback) that members are added to each other's Friends Network only when there is mutual agreement between them.
To launch this feature, we'll have to delete all current Friends from all members' profiles. We could not find a technical way to avoid this.
So, please make a list of the friends you will want to invite again after we launch the new feature, so you can quickly re-establish your list.
Sorry for the inconvenience this causes, and hope you enjoy the improved site.

Erasing the friend list and starting it again from scratch will feel like making new friends again. This is quite exciting and very much enjoyable I feel. I'm sure everyone will be pleased to receive so many requests everyday for several days. At least... I hope I'll get some ! ;-)

We looked hard into getting an automatic way to 'check' which of the 5800 members have mutual friends. But this is niether cheap nor simple not gauranteed to work on our current system, as the system was not built with this in mind.
So we apologise, but it will be up to the members to re-establish their network.
As some folks mentioned, this might actually have some side benefits which we did not consider at first, such as brushing the dust off non active friendships...

If I got it right from the specs you posted some time ago, the agreement process is separated from the regular mailing system, right ? Meaning that the "5 a day" limit could be changed without lowering the regular mailing anti spam system. Am I still right ?
If so, do you really believe spammers would waist their time sending numerous "be my friend" requests to people they've never met nor talked to ? I doubt so, as 115 characters is far not enough to tell their lies about being some dead president orphan. If I were you, I'd set the limit to 100 for a couple of days or until any spamming is reported.

I work in IT and I can totally understand these things are not easy to automate every time.. however, I also specialise in 'business processes' to mitigate IT impacts... ie PRINT your profile. Then it takes you a few mins to add each person, and you can tick them off whilst you go through the process to ensure you don't forget anyone.
That said, I am obviously from the neanderthal age of IT in that I have not added any friends previously... norma no mates!

Tash, you could just save the page/s of your friends on your PC and then open the files directly , and having the offline and online browser windows open , using cut and paste for the names to create.

Don't underhestimate the power of GoL. :-P I have very good friends of whom I never needed their telephone number, given they log in and check their inbox often enough not to need to call them to keep in touch.

we started with 5 a day only cos there are still bugs that may pop up, so there's still the option that we'll have to re-launch the feature and all members invited will be lost. To miminize the damage if this happens, we kicked off on 5, just for a few days until we find all the bugs.
