Austerity and the Armed Forces

Isnt it kind of funny that lots of countries have been advised or told to slash their govt spending...but its kind of funny that the Armed Forces are NEVER touched. The military is the single biggest sacred cow which needs drastic chopping.

BTW can anyone explain just why this country has Military service for youngsters? AS if Switzerland has anything worthwhile for others to invade

shaun123 I hate to rain on your parade but the article refers only to possible cuts in the future...and we all know that it aint going to happen...the military commanders will engineer or contrive some reason to not only keep the levels but increase them

Every country has something if you go looking and sometimes 'old known' things become valuable whereas before they weren't. Also wars are not all just resource wars but also wars of acquiring strategic territory.

As the Boy Scouts say "be prepared" and I see nothing wrong in a civilian standing army - better than a mercenary army. Civilian drafted armies are more likely to revolt as happened in Viet Nam. I think mercenary armies are far less likely to revolt and hence pose a greater risk to the home population.

Here's a good guide to why it is so difficult to slash American military spending (hell they don't even know how much they're spending, how could they make cuts in an broken accounting system?!).

It would appear that the British military also has accounting problems and difficulties keeping track of their assets.

MPs alarmed by 'missing' £6.3bn defence assets

MPs say an auditor's report which found the Ministry of Defence lost track of assets worth £6.3bn is "alarming".

the military seem to be a law unto themselves

marksist - true about strategic territory ...meant to be the case currently for Libya- i would suppose that a lot has changed since the advent of ICBMs

to people offended by the comment about Switzerland is not worth invading, its a PLUS point!   Would you rather be in a country which no one is bothered with or a country sitting on lots of untapped resources ready for plundering?
