Unfortunately as well the Kent State killings overshadow the killing of black students at Jackson State University:http://www2.kenyon.edu/khistory/60s/webpage.htm

Re: Four Dead in Ohio
Post 1

This was a truly sad day, one that poignantly marked America as a politically savage and bigoted country, the land of the “not so” free, the land of the "in"justice for most.

Only 2 of the 4 students killed were actually part of the peaceful demonstration, the other 2 just shot at random.  The headline that I can remember is “America kills Its Own Children”.

This and many other events have accumulated such weight on the image of America over such a long period of time; it’s no wonder that there is an anti-American backlash today.  Yet America continues to point its wielding finger at many countries, their latest target being China over its financial affairs, but I chuckle when I ponder as to who’s financial situation is really downside up.

I wonder what Jeffrey Miller, Allison Krause; William Schroeder and Sandra Lee Scheuer; (all aged 19 or 20 at the time) would be doing today ?

I think rather this and many incidents show that the American system can be savage and bigoted and this is the reason why in so many polls aorund the world people place the US so low on the list.  Sure there is some minor retail savagery and bigotry among the population at large but it is the wholesale terror of the state and its members and supporters that give the US a bad name.

I was 12 when I first read a book on Kent State and somewhat familiar with popular protest against an unpopular war from TV and newspaper reports but what I could not understand was why American troops would shoot on their own people.  And the article cited above seems to indicate that the US still does not want to confront this issue.  Should the US MoveOn or are those who forget their history condemned to repeat it.

Recently a governing Canadian minister (PM, FM, DM?) stated during the Arab spring uprising that democracies don't shoot their own people.   I immediately thought of Kent State as did my father back in Canada.  Netanyahu has made similar silly utterances: http://972mag.com/netanyahu-democracies-dont-send-armed-agents-to-mow-down-demonstrators/

We've had our own disgraceful episodes like the Toronto G20, the Winnipeg general strike, the killing of Dudley George at Ipperwash: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipperwash_Crisis and so it is important that we have a capable informed non-stenographer media to help inform us so that we can demand and take democratic action.

Fortunately peaceful protest is alive and well in the US but unfortunately the number of arrests against protesters seems to be on the rise:

Over Two Thousand Six Hundred Activists Arrested in US Protests

by Bill Quigley

Since President Obama was inaugurated, there have been over two thousand six hundred arrests of activists protesting in the US.   Research shows over 670 people have been arrested in protests inside the US already in 2011, over 1290 were arrested in 2010, and 665 arrested in 2009.   These figures are certainly underestimate the number actually arrested as arrests in US protests are rarely covered by the mainstream media outlets which focus so intently on arrests of protestors in other countries. (from: http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/05/24 , the article is complete with a list of how many arrested, descriptions of protesters and protests and the dates and organizations invovled).

As  for the four at Kent State they would probably be enjoying their children and grandchildren and hopefully not be foreclosed or have lost their pensions.
