Swissinfo: Poll Finds Swiss Divided over Immigration

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/politics/Poll_finds_Swiss_divided_over_immigration.html?cid=30952830

"A majority of Swiss are not worried about a rise in immigration as a result of the free movement of people in the Schengen zone, a poll has found.

The poll published in the SonntagsBlick newspaper on Sunday found 59 per cent of respondents said immigration by European workers was not a concern, whereas 40 per cent said they were “rather” or “very” concerned. It is a particular worry for people aged over 54 and those with a basic level of education.

Around half were happy with the actual number of foreigners in Switzerland: 48 per cent said foreigners making up 22.1 per cent of the population was “good”, while 34 per cent said it was “much too high”.  "

I'd be curious to know the questions asked!

As you know depending on what and how you pose a question you can get all sorts of different replies and make all kinds of erroneous judgements based on the data.  Ask Americans if they support welfare (a politically and emotionally charged word) or increasing it, they say no but ask if the government should help the poor and less able they'll say yes.  This is because 'welfare cheats' and 'black welfare mamas driving cadillacs' has been so ingrained intot the American public esp. in the Reagan years (but also under Clinton who initiated welfare reform).

If in the poll they were to talk about certain ethnic groups or socioeconomic strata and immigration I wonder what sort or response they would get.

Also just because the Swiss are positive about immigration doesn't mean they are correct about the nature and benefits about immigration.  However better they are posiitive rather than xenophobic anti-immigrationists we see and hear from so much in Canada, the US and the EU.
