Sounded like a great party you guys had!!! Congratulations to the organisers. Out of interest, were there many "no-shows" or people cancelling at the last minute? No need to quote member names or anything like that this time, just a percentage figure of no-shows would be useful information. I am asking because I was reading the nice posting from Sherri below about a GoL New-Members-Drinks evening and the "no-show" rate was 45% which was a pity. In fact many organisers, including myself, are having similar expereinces with no-shows and is it getting to the stage where something needs to be done?

From an organisers point of view, it can be really tricky to know what to do when arranging an event like a GoL drinks evening. Usually about 500 members read the posting in the members activities section, about 50 members confirm that they are going to attend and the event is full to maximum capacity, but then on the evening of the actual party only about 20 or 30 members actually show up....and that is usually spread over the course of the whole evening with most people not showing up until an hour after the scheduled start time.

I know some people think they need to arrive "fashionably late" but sometimes that is taken too far. People do not behave like that when meeting their "non-GoL" friends so they should treat GoL events with the proper level of respect. I have just been helping to arrange a party in London (which is nothing to do with GoL), but out of the 240 people on the guest list everyone showed up which is the way it should be with GoL events too.

Admittedly, the main thing is that those GoL members who do show up have a nice time, but it can put the organiser into an awkward situation if they have booked a whole bar or restaurant for 50-60 people and only half that number show up. Of course I understand that in some cases people will have perfectly good reasons for being a "no-show" at an event, but they should at least have the decency and courtesty to inform the relevant organiser beforehand. In my view, to simply not show up at an event which you have agreed to attend, and to say nothing to the organiser either before or after the event is unacceptable behaviour.

As many event organisers know, it takes time, effort, work and often some money to make events happen and members should not take that for granted. When it comes to arranging GoL events, I find that the "active" GoL members and the members on my friends network are really great about being supportive and attending events when they say they will, which is something I really appreciate. However there are other GoL members out there who are not honouring their commitments which they themselves choose to make to GoL events.

I am sorry to say this, but the time might have come for organisers to politely report publicly on this forum as to which members did not show up to an event which they were committed. At least then other organisers know how reliable certain members are and can either adjust restaurant or bar bookings accordingly to reflect this, or allocate places to GoL members who have a better reliability record!

that was a super night out!
Those shots were lethal. I still feel a bit wobbly this morning, you should have seen me on my bike heading for home afterwards....it was slow and studied progress up Boulevard Helevetique!!!
Thanks to Swiss Kiss for organising a great do, to all the charming new people I met and for the bar staff for being so welcoming and cheerful...especially "bartender" he's a gas! I can't wait to see the pictures.

To answer your question, 66 GoL'ers booked, 54 confirmed twice, a handful (ca. 5) excused themselves formally... and 58 showed up last night :)))))))

All in all, that's 3 no shows

..as for reporting no-shows... we frankly feel a bit reluctant to go that far but if some people consistently "book" and fail to show up we might do that. For the time being, we have a little handful of "profiles" that we know aren't trustable about showing up lol but that's life

Thanks for the details and that is a good result. A no-show + cancellation rate of about 10% total is manageable and congratulations again on arranging a good event.

I agree about the no-shows and until recently I have always been reluctant to report a list of names to anybody either. However, if I knew that my name was going to be reported publicly on this forum if I did not attend an event to which I had made a committment then that would certainly be a major incentive to attend the event or notify the organiser in advance if I had to cancel for any reason.

On the other hand, I fully agree that GoL is about fun and friends, so reporting people for not showing up to events can seem like a too serious approach. It is tricky to know where to draw the line.

.......well, considering I don't recall actually leaving Scandalo, I have the strange suspicion that my Evil Twin - BetC made an appearance last night! Wow - those shots flattened me. Very tasty - but oh so lethal. At least I wasn't dancing on the tables (that I know of). :)

Great to meet so many new people! Thanks to all for the laughs and conversation! Wonderfully fun group of people and the bar was quite cozy!

I was in fact the extreme opposite of a no-show; I hadn't rsvp'd or intended to be there, but was in the company of a friend who said "go on, come along" and voila, found myself at the party having a great time.

The shots were wicked, the company great fun, and I was sorry to depart after midnight. But you know, some of us do have to work for a living!

Thanks for being such delightful hosts, and to the bar, whose staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome. It was interesting to find that although (as far as I know) this wasn't a no smoking event, very very few people smoked, which helped in making the atmostphere even more pleasant.

There is a system in place to deal with no shows.. and I quote from the event organisers page....

"and if all that doesn't work...Say hello to our little friend the No Shows List (Tony Montana quote)

We’re now keeping track members who regularly pull No Shows, and members with 3 strikes may be barred from joining more activities.

The No Shows list will not be made public (at-least for now).

Organizers: if you have no shows, please Email us at [email protected] with:

* Name & Date of the Activity
* User Name of the No Show members "
