Curry Club - Royal India
We had a full house at Vinay's again, we'd not been back here for a while.  Most people last night were new people... great to see, in fact so many of you there wasn't enough time to do all the newbie introductions!

Ok, so it was the first time for most last night, therefore I'd be interested in hearing what you all thought of the restaurant.  We have a lot of restaurants on a 'regular' list now, as well as a few more new ones to try - but it would be interesting to hear what you thought about the Royal India... so don't be shy... regular curry clubbers can comment too obviously... I just want to get a bit of feedback to assess a sort of ranking structure of where we go in the future based on food quality, price, atmosphere etc.

Cheers.... Dean. :D

As a regular curry member and having been to almost all the various restaurants we've tried , I can now decide when to attend based on the venue, and the Royal India is one that I will only go to if we haven't been anywhere for a while or if it's a special night.. The food is always bland and watery compared to the other places we visit, the one saving grace is the layout makes it easy to chat with friends and move around, but other than that it not top of my list.. So far the it's been the Nyon curry house, then Godivas, Little India and the Shahi..

Lots of new faces last night....also meaning not so many regulars....Is there a message there i wonder?:w00t:

I think where ever we go it is always a great social event so it does boil down to quality and price. As the price seems to be consistent in the different venues (Thanks to Deano) then we are almost left with just the food and service to compare. The Royal India is ok but only ok. The "plus" of course is that it is convenient. We do get much better quality and varied food elsewhere though. Can the metal plates go back to the prison they came from or perhaps we all go to Geneve plage and play Frisbee :P

The fact we go to the Royal India often is a good sign for Vinnay...improving the food (and we know we do not need to pay more) may help maintain that frequency.

Cheers

Hey all, I thought the food last night was a definite improvement on the last time around (which had been my first outing with the curry club anyway). But I agree with Dave that the tin plates are a disaster (yep, defnitely evokes prison), and Trevor's ranking pretty much tallies with mine. The Sultan (Nyon) was out of this world! 35 CHF for this is OK, but more, noooooooooooo....

I liked Royal India. The owner is a very nice person and this is one of the venues I would go back to. Maybe I missed talking to more members as the place was not very suitable to talk to more than 2 persons. I missed dessert...

Although the food isn't great I don't think its too bad to avoid the place. Vinnay and his staff are always really friendly which I think counts for a lot when choosing a restaurant. I agree with Paloma though... it would be nice to have a dessert :-)

here's my rating based on the variables:

food: shahi, nyon curry place,  little india, lady godiva, royal india

Service: shahi, nyon curry place, little india , royal india, lady godiva

logistics ( parking, easy to reach, table placement, bar service.

Nyon curry place, shahi, royal india, lady godiva/little india

Quality of welcoming spirit: royal india, nyon curry place, lady godiva, shahi/little india

but i must add the food last night was much better than usual and i find the atmosphere

friendly and it's nice to have the place to ourselves.

Hello Dean, hope i've done this right, in the right place.

Just to say once again thanks for last night at my second curry club evening.

Must agree with other comments here that the food was just ok compared to the Shaih Restaurant where the quality was excellent, and the sauces were just as they should be,

very good consistency, nice and thick as indian food should be. Unfortunately, did not find this in the food last night. Too liquidy and lack of choice. Nonetheless, enjoyable evening.

If I may suggest a place: TAJ MAHAL

20 Grande Rue

74160 St. Julien, France

Being one of the newbies, I shall be brave and write my honest appreciation of the evening. The lieu was a fun one; the Paquis is always great for that. The people I met at the evening were all open, interesting and welcoming - especially Dean, thank you. I made new friends and look forward to the next Curry evening. As far as the food is concerned, I was not terribly impressed. Being from India/Pakistan, I was not expecting very much to be honest, but the food was less than my expectations. I don't eat at Indian restaurants much, especially in Geneva, and the meal did nothing to change my impression of Indian restaurants in GE. Both curries (lamb & chicken) tasted as if they had come out of a jar and the potato/pea curry tasted a bit funny. Having said that, the rice, poppadoms and daal were good! I think I may one of those that skips this restaurant next time, despite Vinay being so very social - no offence.

Hello Dean.

Thanks for organizing yesterday's event. I know it is a lot of work.

Well, to be honest, it is far from being the best Indian meal I have ever enjoyed. Let's say it was OK, but as I went a fortnight ago to Ferney (the resto in the main street, but I do not remember its name) and celebrated my birthday in the Rajpoute (Ornex) a few months ago, I have comparison elements (not even mentioning "Little India", which is also better to my view). Those two are fantastic and the flavours are infinitely more diverse than what we enjoyed yesterday. About the price... They may be more expensive (as a matter of fact, I do not remember what I paid), but I am sure that if you book the Ferney one and ask for a general menu, they can come up with a good offer.

But the ambiance was nice and it was great to chat with old and new acquaintances.

Cheers

Antinea

Like others, it was a good venue with plenty of room to mingle. The staff were friendly and helpful. The trays are a definite no, Chef Ramsay would certainly not approve. The food was OK but I have to say I have had better. I will come again to curry club nights but would prefer to try some of the other curry houses before a return visit to Royal India.
