The curry nights Deano organizes have got to be one of my favorite activities! The formula is simple so you just go and have a great time. We even get celebrities there, like Colin Firth, who has been to the last two evenings. Keeps claiming his name is Peter and he is from Tanzania, running cigarette sweatshops but we just nod and smile politely...
Our youngest member, no names here but she is affectionately known as Littl'Un, had the audacity to request for a carafe of water (aka free drink) and almost started a brawl with the waiters.
Luckily Deano stood up and spoke a few words in their language, brandishing the money we had paid Jo in a threatening manner (get it right, it was Deano who was threatening the waiters, not us threatening Jo).
Smiles broke out, the waiter disappeared into the loo and behold! we were offered unlimited amounts of free water for the rest of the night.
I wouldn't compare Deano's exploit to another feast held in Cana, some years back back, run by some other guy on IoL (Israel on Line), but it was close, really close...

Yes... the water dramas were a bit strange!! In the UK, it's the first thing the waiters do...bring a jug of water to your table...I think because it saves them running for it when you collapse in agony after impressing your mates after ordering a Vindaloo, which always seems a good idea after 15 pints!! Anyway, no chance of any Geneva curry ever being that spicy unless we take over the kitchen by gunpoint and force them to put extra powder in the pan!!
Joking aside, I was a bit peeved that the restaurant made a fuss about the water... making it obvious to customers that they would rather you paid for water is a bit desperate... this is why I like the Royal India and the loveable if not eccentric Vinay... he'd be happy for people to go to his restaurant, not even eat, just to sit and chat...he'd join in and give you all the water you wanted!! But... last night, in the Shahi, the food was good and was very plentiful...do you all agree?? So let's not be too harsh... and all the Aussies that were there last night, must be wondering why it's not BYO (ok... you have to have been to Oz to know the pleasure of BYO!!)
It was great to meet new people and have a laugh, I hope everyone left full and happy (water shinanigans aside!)
See you all soon...oh... thanks for the above comments on this being a favourite activity...and Mary's comments on Peter Safari Marley being Colin Firth in disguise...very funny...Peter for the next James Bond, that's what I say!!!
Chao for now...Deano!

Food was great last night and plenty of it, even if Dean can't tell the difference between Lamb and Beef (can he tell Marg from Butter?).
Nice to see the reintroduction of the 30 secs intro , although far too many non drinkers for my liking (where's the fun in that), I think I should have volunteered to drink on their behalf as it would have probably solved the water issue having someone drink lots of beer.
Lets have another one soon and maybe a new resto? Cafe Bollywood?

...Eater! Lamb, beef, Bengali Tiger...all tastes the same to me! Yes, I was a bit disappointed on the drinking front Trev...as I always say in my intros..."...the Curry Club is for like-minded people who like a beer and a curry..blah blah..." I think we better enforce this issue as a pre-requisite (is that how it's spelt?) when posting... How about the next one is for drinkers only? (except for designated drivers incase someone sues me for having an accident after being forced to drink!) I don't want this Club to have a namby-pamby reputation! Beer, drinking games, hot chilli challenges and pass the popadum, no hands without it breaking! (Very un-Swiss I know... but some of us are home-sick!) Thoughts anyone?

'Twas indeed another good night. Lots of laughs, erms, ahs, and I thought the green sauce was pretty damn hot.
And the water. First were informed it was illegal to serve us tap water, then we had the commercially not viable argument... which would have been the weaker of the two if the first were really true... BUT (not before some glasses really were filled from the bathrooms) the guy who had adamantly refused us water (although was prepared to do a deal for 2 purchased beers), somehow did manage to step over himself and not only proceed later to serve it, all round, BUT with a LOVELY SMILE. This won my forgiveness.
And indeed, Colin Firth does seem to have gone colonial...

I was not there, but everytime I read amazing reviews Deano's Curry Club. I can only imagine a lot of work goes into coordinating the many folks who show up at the dinners, all done for a while already by Deano. Good on ya mate.

Dean, thanks for organising a great night. I was a Curry Club "ver-gen", but I enjoyed the experience, meeting new people and bumping into old friends. MarmarK's description captured the essence of the evening.
Plus, I had the best seat in the house, opposite Colin.
Looking forward to the next one.

the food was excellent, definately one of the best. just a shame about the water thing. but eventually got over that which was good of them.
great company and nice to see the return of the drinking games. this was possibly my last curry club (unless you have another one before 6.th july. hint hint) but iv always loved the curry clubs so a massive big thankyou for organising them :-)
