Geeks--and "young charming smart ladies"--in Geneva --26 Feb
Feb 27, 2007 @ 02:01
We had an amazing 90+% (!!!) turnout (from 9 countries) in spite of rain, horrible traffic, and some sort of bug that's going around and making people sick. Very interesting variety of people too -- bio/medical, software, telecom, NGOs, grad/phd students, CERN people (though poor Flippo was the only CMS person and was way outnumbered by the ATLAS types), and people who like to drink beer (in some cases free beer, since women are not allowed to buy their first drink at this event). Thanks for coming out!

Indeed, it was a successful first Geek Gathering, lots of people showing up, lots of Guiness beers on the tables, obviously geeks have good taste ! And yes, it was striking I was the only CMS member around, perhaps all the others were too much of a geek and just kept working ?! Next time I'll bring another one if I manage to pull him off his PC ... Although, there are already rumours about a Geek Test for new participants to future Geek Gatherings, so he/she first has to pass the test of course :-)
Anyway, good work, it was a fun evening :-))

It was great to meet so many nice folks and share some interesting conversation and a few beers. Thanks again for organizing (and for graciously paying for the first beer for the "young charming smart ladies” in the crowd). I’m looking forward to the next one.

Great evening with lots of fun people. Thanks to John for organizing it! Excellent job. Looking forward to the next one where we have to explain Mr. Scientist the difference of CMS and ATLAS. Everyone else knows. No? Ok, enough geeking....

I was not there as I would have felt inferior next to all the brainpower in the room, but the activity - honestly - just sounded great.
As a wanna be programmer, I would love to come to the next one!

Actual exchange I heard, with names changed to protect the guilty:
Person A: "What do you do, person B?"
Person B: "I'm a software programmer."
Person A: "Oh, so you program in C++"
Person B, quite casually: "No, they didn't teach C++ when I was in school because it was already obsolete. Take your punch cards and go home, beeyotch."
(Ok, so I added that last part... but the effect was the same, namely old (over 25) people getting out of their wheelchairs to buy more Guiness.)

I miss punch cards ! No screens to worry about, and writing all code by hand .. actually using pen & paper..

But you have to be there next time.
It was such a lovely evening. We definitely should do this again.
