International Issues - Development
A small group (17 gol'ers) met to discuss international issues - topic being development.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
What does "development" (in the societal sense) mean to you? Does your definition share similarities with the concept of "personal development"? What criteria would you use to measure the "development" of a society?

How do you consider the term "development" is used in practice? Do you believe that this is the right approach and if not, what should it be?
------------------------------------------------------------------

We didn't resolve all the world's problems but did come up with some burning topics such as anti tobacco drive, gender equality (this one was fun! guys were hoplessly outclassed ! wonder why -:), definition of culture development, number game - GDP, developing v/s developed nations, growing disparity between rich and poor and some country profiles such as korea, china, brazil, egypt .....looks like we have quite a few issues lined up for the next session(s).

Thx Fiona (apple) for the initiative.

The discussion and company was great, but equally nice was the Rakesh's hospitality - he offered us a lovely buffet of Indian food, which was marvelous. Thanks so much from all of us!

The international issues dinner in the end probably raised many more questions than it provided conclusive answers: what are the trade-offs between material and spiritual well-being, social development vs. personal development, if any? how can you measure happiness objectively, if at all? how do you reach a state of being "culturally developed" (French and American views seem to differ on this one...)?

Bring together 17 GOLers to address these issues, representing all 5 continents, 15 different countries, various professions from the private and public sectors, and a multitude of diverse perspectives, and you can imagine a really interesting - and indeed at times heated - discussion... it was lots of fun and totally worthwhile, just too short...

Many thanks, Rakesh, for your hospitality and great food, and Apple for initiating this event!
