hey, it was almost a pool marathon…. the last game ended after 5 hours….
congrats to busstop who finally won this tournament!!! he deserved to win as being the most complete player of us all. well done!
after an introduction game explaining the funky tournament rules everyone spread out to the other tables for the games in the group. most of the players were extremely focused and heavy tension was in the air. definitely not the evening to make new friends, sorry GOL ;-)
the games were tight but of course only four players could make it to the semi finals.
by name: busstop, phil, summermind and matt (mr beau).
yes, you read it right: my support girl in the swiss shirt cheerleaded me into the semi-finals. thank you thank you thank you. would not have made it without you!
the final was played by busstop and phil and a 3-1 win by busstop in this best of 5 series. good one, mr. organizer.
the tournament was great fun and everyone enjoyed it. thanks to all who came to face this competition! and thanks to all the supporters and fans. there is only one question:
when are we playing the next one?
See you, Urs

Well, as expected Nabil stormed through and won. Nice one mate! It was an interesting night to say the least. However, I think the heavy tension Urs mentioned might've been caused in part by the rules with which we were playing, which were ... different. To be honest in 25 years of playing competitively, I've never experienced an atmosphere where it could've kicked off at least three times. (the "Flash photography strictly forbidden" incident springs to mind!)
That said, for my part it was challenging but as ever even with the tension a great night. Maybe for the next one we could implement Katri's Finnish rules? DEFINITELY sounds more fun.
Cheers,
Rich

And special congrats to Busstop! Of course I knew all along that you'd win :) It was really a great evening, not a moment of boredom for the whole 5 hours. We have a lot of great pool players on GoL, it was exciting to watch!
As to Finnish pool rules, there are many possible variations but the idea is pretty much this: on top of the normal equipment you need a good supply of vodka. Then...
- Whenever you put a ball in a pocket, you drink, to celebrate
- Whenever you miss it, you drink, to drown your sorrow
- Whenever you make a scratch, you drink
- Whenever the judge says so, you drink
- If you contest the judge or the rules at any point, you drink (see the link to mean UNO, this is mean Finnish pool!)
- Whenever you're not currently drinking, you should have a shot immediately
The winner is the one who is still standing at the end of the tournament. If anyone still cares/remembers what game they were playing to begin with that is.
Rich had some other interesting rule variants as well, relating to the position of the sun, starsigns of the players and the number of different alcoholic beverages consumed by the audience during the evening (very important whether it's an even or an uneven number of beers to make the appropriate ruling!)

I hadn't actually considered doing that to give me an unfair advantage! Not a bad idea. I might need to go for the Irish version of downing Guiness but I guess the principles the same. :-)

the one i was cheerleading for .. of course!!
Have to say that i never thought it was possible to spend 5hs watching my friends playing pool with funky rules and not only .. getting the rules (towards the end of the evening) and restlessly cheerleading, but also not get bored!! Tired, yeah .. but bored?? I couldn't take my eyes off the pool table! Not even to chat! (and THAT is something!!).
The tournament was really exciting. some great surprises like Christel (you were absolutely amazing and kicked some real asses!! GO GIRL!!)and Rich not making it to the semifinals (!! was it the lack of beer? or the fact that no one else was drinking for once???)
Kudos to all the player and this are my special pizes nominations :)
- Best organizer : BusStop :) ... ok a tiny bit on the stressed side but still .. great job!
- Best comebacks : Summermind :) .. some of the most exciting games i saw, from having 5 or 6 balls on the table vs only 1 or 2 of the opponent to .. winning!!!!!!!!
- Best Pool Sprit: Rashka (and I am not talking about Bacardi) .. the important is not wining ,but being creative :P
- Best newcomer (to the GOL pool scene) Christel!!
- Most sportive Player: Timo, he played till the end always smiling :)
- Best Cheerleading Act: Me,Katri,Gaelle, Cpott and all the other cheerleaders!
- Best cheering spirit : Minda :) truly and honestly cheering for everyone!!
Vale ;) - I found my new vocation when it comes to pool. I am definetly more effective as a cheerleader then a player!!!

Cheerleader-drinking is not mandatory in Finnish pool but highly encouraged as it helps them to understand the evolution of the game and to keep up with the rules. Otherwise they might start making outrageous claims like "this game doesn't make any sense!" or "this is not real pool!" (in which case the judge would likely rule that they have to drink, anyway)

Hmmm ... I suppose it's a good thing then that yours truly is working for the Red Cross :-). However, I'm not sure I can perform CPR (or anyone would want me to) after even one game of Finnish Rules.

I think the rules were a bit of a challenge for most. Well, except the organizer/winner--hmmmmm, coincidence? :) The evening was a bit more tense than I anticipated but I think everyone had a good time. I'll be away for the next 4 weeks so someone else can take the Sunday night pool torch--perhaps a chance to get feedback on future tournament rules??
I just submitted my pics from last night so they should be up soon. I've also hosted them on the internet, so drop me a line if you're interested in seeing them and I'll let you know the address.
Cheers,
Matt
P.S. I still think I got lucky in that I beat Rich, but that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes. :)
