Tech night AKA GiG 2
Another amazing turnout last night for Tech Night 2 aka "Geeks (and random suave and sophisticated people who like to drink refreshing BEvERages) in Geneva" part deux. There were at least 29 people from 15 countries by my count, including several who heard about the event from others and decided to tag along. Good mix of old (veterans?) and new as well.

I think that bar had its best Monday night ever. We filled it up and completely took over the front half... well, at least we did after we scared off the one guy sitting in the corner who didn't get the hint when we kept adding table after table after table... :)

Look forward to seeing everyone next time!

............ what actually constitutes being a "GEEK"?

Sat looking at Tax Exemption rules for the UK at the moment which makes me feel like I am slowly slipping into that mold.

HOWEVER, the fact that I am also sitting thinking about my first glass of wine tonight at 10am may just negate this transformation!

Enlightenment please!!!

If "theta" is just an angle, how much is ( cos(theta) - sin(theta) )^2 + 2 * sin(theta) * cos(theta) ??
If you can solve that one within 5s, you qualify for the next geek evening :-))
Otherwise, you will just have to torture a geek you know is going there, to find out which bar it is and then "accidently" show up in the same bar at the right time, hehe :-))

It seems more and more geeks are getting interested in that evening, indeed, we took over half of the bar. The goal for next edition should be to fill up the entire bar I guess !
Also the number of CERN people attending increased, very soon we will be able to organize a CERN offsite meeting there, you know a place where colleagues meet, drink beer and don't talk about work for a change :-)

Anyway, this 2nd edition was again fun, keep it up !

The fact that you actually looked up tax exemption rules means you qualify. :)

The fact that you are wanting a glass of wine at 10 am... hmmm... well, that could mean a lot of things. :)

I would say that it's justified, though, since the people who wrote the tax exemption rules were probably quite tipsy themselves.

It is true, women are not allowed to pay for their first drink at this event. One of the gentlemen is supposed to step up and buy it. And, I have to say, there are a couple of the CERN regulars who did a very fine job of making sure this rule was enforced when I was not there, so a big thank you to them.

It is indeed a shameless ploy, but I don't care. :)

i think I need to read up on science a bit more - not ever my strong point at school!!

Love the idea of first drink being bought for you - how civilized! So when do you let the secret out of the location for the get together? Or is there some impossible code to crack before you are let in on the whole thing?

Oh and yes of course the answer is 1 - who doesnt know that????

Yes, I think we will try to do an LoL version... maybe we'll train it (is that a verb?) up there as a group. That way we can guarantee people will show and that we will do our share to reduce the supply of Guiness in Lausanne...

(I was going to say "to make sure we have critical mass," but you can't say stuff like that with all the CERN people around... :)

I think the first G in GiG is turning into "Guiness" btw...

So if you are in Lausanne and want to do this... please send me a note!
