The Book Club - A party for Minds!
WOW Davide (Giglio6973)! An interesting bunch of heads you collected! :)
I could finally join the Book Club last night and I'm so happy I did it!
Sitting around snacks and wine, profiting the gentle hospitality of Olga (Olga_1401, Thanks again Olga!), each of us presented a book to the others and we discussed the issues around it, the style, the implications...
We ranked from the intimistic poetry of Paolo Coelho, thanks to Rasha (Loula) to the hopeless tales of Dino Buzzati thanks to Davide (Giglio6973), to the mind opening mental training of existentialist psychiatrist R. D. Laing in "Knots", presented by David (Mirage), up to the exasperated detailed denonciations of religion's damages in Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion" and Christopher Hitchens' "God is not Great - How religion poisons everything"...

I'll let Giglio resume the books (including the ones I didn't mention and the contributions from Sara(what's your nickname, btw?), Dina, Valli, Gabriella (Miss_G)...
I just wanted to share the enthusiasm I'm still feeling for last night Party for Minds!
Don't miss the next one if you can!

Post 1
The subject of conversations and the atmosphere itself were great !
I would like also to share my enthusiasm with Stefano.
We should maintain this excellent tradition to get together for sharing
and discovering new ideas and new books.
And of course, a glass of wine helps to make people feel more relaxed
after the end of working day :-))

Thanks Stefano!

Just adding some more references:

from David:

This evening I spoke about the book Knots - Psychology written in Poetry form - by R.D. Laing.

Useful links:

http://laingsociety.org/biblio/knots.htm
http://www.decaelo.com/rdlaing/

R.D. Laing (1927-1989) Only British psychiatrist of any real intellectual stature, heavily influenced by Sartrian existentialism. Frequently dismissed by the psychiatric establishment as a 1960s hippy and drunk, Laing was an original 'anti-psychiatrist' who wrote profoundly and sometimes poetically of the influence on the individual of his or her, often tormented, social experience. Often and wrongly accused of 'blaming' parents for their children's 'schizophrenia', he did much to explicate the role of family life in the generation of madness.
Best known books
The Divided Self
The Self and Others
Sanity, Madness, and the Family (with Aaron Esterson)
The Politics of Experience
The Politics of the Family (essays)
The Facts of Life
The Voice of Experience
Wisdom, Madness, and Folly (Autobiography)

from Olga:
The reference of my book I mentioned briefly is "Absinthe" by Phil Baker.
It's about history, rituals, consequences and popularity of Absinthe, its large
influence in the artistic world, especially in the beginning of 19th century.

Rasha talked to us about the book "Manual of the Warrior of Light", by Paulo Coehlo.
You can find reference on http://www.santjordi-asociados.com/books.htm#warrior

The short tale i read is "The Seven Messengers" by Dino Buzzati.
it talk about the neverending search of every human being, and the attitude toward past and future.

Thanks to everyone and see you soon :)

have a great week
