You Got Male Party last night...
Howdy! This is a disappointed Iolly writing here.....:crying:

I have been organising events for 9 years now, over 2 years with glocals, and they were all a hit. I am talking about the famous Musical Chairs Dinners, the Salsa Courses and, most recently, the Fresh Fish Drinks. Guess there had to be one time when things were going to work out less well...

I am proactively going to write a review about the last night You Got Male Party. An organiser has to be happy when things are great, but also know how to live with a flop.
The number of shows was really poor, against all odds. I had received a ton of encouraging emails and confirmations of about 150 people coming. I don't know what happened, but they just didn't show up....

I asked myself why, maybe ski season, maybe the theme, maybe cold weather, maybe bad cosmic waves?! Why do you think 150 peolple that confirmed did not show up?

We live and learn!!

I would like to thank all those who showed up, and to say a special big bravo to these guys: Rick (pntbreakrick), Andrei (Extremal), Daniel (liberulo), Greg (Syd_Brown), Pierre-Yves (Ammonite), Erik.....they dressed up as women beyhond my expectations!!! Thanks to the volunteeers that played the game. You are all superb!

Greg and Andrei gave us a "personalised" strip-tease that I ain't gonna forget that soon :hehe: You guys rock!

Better luck next time. Just need some time to "lick my wounds", and I'll be back!

Hi Iolly,

Even if people didn't show up, you made a great effort anyway and that's something!...and I can definitely confirm that usually all parties you and/or Nir organise are great fun and I've always had a blast!

I nevertheless enjoyed seeing those brave males showing up as women, good on them!

Keep up with the good spirit always :-)

Cheers,

Pixie

Hi Iolly

First off, Im sorry alot of people who said they would come did not show up.
Im not judging anyone, and Im sure none of them had bad intentions, but I hope people will be more considerate in the future, and will show up when they sign up.

Organizing an activity takes guts, and organzing a big activity, where you reserve a venue and negotiate drink prices takes a whole lot of guts.

You've organized a ton of activities in the past, you've touched alot of lives, and I hope you will keep doing your thing and keep organizing alot more activities in the future.

As you can see from the pic below, it looks like the people who did show up went all out and had a good time.

Here are the rest of the pictures , and Im already looking forward to the next one.

Thanks again and have a great week.

Hey Landy,

You know what they say: only the people who never dare to do are the people who never fall down.

So you have 1 bad party...I have been organising parties for the past 8 years, and in that time I had more bad parties than I can remeber. The only thing you can do is do your best: plan all the elements, make sure people about the party, and then just hope people will come. Sometimes they do, sometimes - for reasons that no one can tell - they just don't. You dared to do something big, and I really admire you (as do many other people) for that.

I think people know well that you do your best, and so not expect EVERYTHING you do to be perfect and a hit. All things you did until now were amazing, and 1 slip up is only natural...(-:

Last point: having said all of the above, I know well the terrible feeling of organising a party, and not having people show up. I've been there before. It's a feeling (atleast for me) of sadness and anger and dispointment and self doubt of 'do I still have what it takes' all together, plus a bit of embarassment, all rolled out into 1. Not very inviting...But it'll pass in a few days. And what realy matter is what you do now: do you stop doing your terrific activities because of this 1 little fall, or do you come back stronger and give us more fun...I know many many many people hope you'll pick the 2nd route.

OK, that's it.

Love you very much,

Nir

i'll join the others in saying i feel terrible for you, and just like Julian, i (thought) had a whopping 7 no shows at TD the other night, but that pales in comparison! maybe the trick in this case would be to ask people to formally sign-up? although it's very unpractical, when you're looking at this many people... and as we all know, it doesn't really guarantee anything.

and to follow-up on Julian's point, i actually started my very own no-shows spreadsheet after the last TD: only one of the seven let me know he wasn't going to be able to make it, and noone apologised the next day either! as far as i'm concerned, it's time to get serious with these people...

Minda, Julian,

Thanks for the feedback about no-shows. We know it's a real issue for organisers, and Oded and I are breaking our heads on how to manage it...

We tried managing a 'no show' list, where organisers send us the names of the no shows, we collect all the names, and when someone gets to 3 no-shows, he/she is warned and then maybe suspended / blocked. But it turned out to be too complex to manager.

We're now thinking of developing a more automated system, where the organiser can automatically mark people who pulled a no-show. The system will then do 3 things with the data:
- send the no-show member an automatic warning
- track if there are even more no-shows from this members, and if the member gets to 3 no-shows, he/she will be automatically suspended.
- when this member joins more activities, the organiser will see a flag saying 'this member already has x no-shows', so the organiser can decide if to count on this member or not)

There's still a lot of stuff to solve, both on the functuinality and on the user-interface, but that's the general direction.

What think?

Thanks,

Nir

Iolly - thanks very much for organizing the party! I liked it - it was CRAZY! ))

Iolly, please, don't be disappointed...

You did everything right. It's too bad for the no show: they missed the entrance cocktails & chocolates, the fun, the fingerfood, the "crazyness" cited by Extremal, the Helium-Delirium, the strip-teases (yup, there was more than one) and a good occasion to meet open people.

We weren't a ton, but, hey, I've had a great time!

Don't let this get you down!

Syd.

PS: thank you for not posting the strip tease pictures - Mystery will remain for the absent people... :P

PS2: Gimme time to clean and iron all the furniture you lended me...

Ouch!

:crying:

Sorry to hear many people didn't show up!

But Happy to read positive feedback from people who were there! :)

We had other plans since the beginning, as I told you (and I was very offended that you didn't find stiletto shoes in size 44 :P ) but I was surprised that for once you didn't have the usual problem (Where to fit the too many people attending?)

Don't get used to it! ;)

Nir, that sounds great! i like the idea of it all being automatic so it's not one person who has to worry about it and compile all the info. if i understand correctly, we'd just have to send someone a mail with the names and then the system takes care of it, right?

well done!!!

hey Iolly, thanks again for organising 'you got Male' - it was a crazy idea and i'm glad i checked it out because i had loads of fun !!  the boys had a great time trying out all the outfits that we had chosen for them, and i wouldn't be surprised if one of the guys would start wearing mascara on a regular basis  ;)

about the no-shows, you shouldn't take it personally... whatever people were up to, they didn't mean to hurt you or snob you, but maybe it would be a good idea to contact them to find out what went wrong their end ??

so... keep you pretty chin up and smile !! we love you and we loved the party !!

cheers - nat

hi Lolly,

I had a great time and I will admit that getting the boys ready for the show was a riot in itself . Too bad we don't have pictures. One of them asked me if he could keep my mini skirt after the evening and I  don't think that he was kidding me.

Anyway given that the place was supposed to fit a maximum of 200 people, could have some people be afraid that they wouldn't get in ?

cheers

Darling, if I hadn't been in another country, I would have been there with bells on.  It looks like it was a fantastic night, even with those slack no-show-ers. I am so sorry that I missed out - Syd looked particularly fetching I must say!

Don't be discouraged and DO hold more events like this one. Honey I promise, if I am in the same country, I am SO THERE!!!

love

Hi Iolly,

The No-Show don't know what they have missed! The "ladies" where absolutely "funtastic", we all had a great time watching them being all girlish and flirty...

So thank you to all these guys and of course, thank you Iolly!

By the way, I almost didn't come because as I couldn't be there early I was afraid you wouldn't let me in... and I'm really glad I did come.

Same with us, we saw that only 200 could get in and we were afraid it might be full, and only 2 out of 3 of us had our printed profile.  We were a little afraid of going and not being let in as well.  Also, it was *really* cold that night and going outside wasnt super inviting. Still glad we did however, and thanks also to the "ladies" who really did a great job.

First of all, thanks for that brilliant idea Iolly, and I'm so sorry for the disapointment (I can relate from my own events, to some extent). Had I been available that night, I'd have come and surely loved it. But, to make it short, let's face it:

Men are sissies, with few exceptions. Boys love seing girls going out half naked in mini-skirts (even if they totaly ignore the fact that it's not always as easy as it may seem for them to have the guts to go out in their new sexy dress), enjoy their nice haircut (even if they assume that the "neglige" style takes 5 minutes to fix, while it actually cost her 2 hours and 240.-chf), their stunning high leg boots (ignoring it hurts like hell dancing in those) and beautifull eyes (shaved eyebrows, quality make-up... you got it now). But as them to dress up a bit better, no, not even a tie, just a clean shirt and less baggy jeans, or shave... and they'll call you a fashion victim. No wonder, to me, that few of them actually had the guts to dress up as girls. Oh, and don't forget the homophobia level in our "presumablity politically correct" society. Too bad for them if they are too scared to take chances with their image to enjoy a blasting party.

But why register then? Not having the guts to dress as a girl is laughable. Registering and not coming is rude. I'd be ashamed of myself if I had done it. Full point.
Nir_ (17/02/2008)
Minda, Julian,

I support the idea. But, as we live in a "zapping" society, where planning, choices and commitment seems more and more difficult, and replaced by last minute "because my mood's worth it" decisions, I fear that, if people know they might be "punished" if they register and don't show... they might just not register anymore at all. If registering for an event is not compulsory, people will then tend to decide last minute and not register, which solves nothing. But compulsory registering for a big party just seems impossible. How can you possibly ask 500 poeple to know a week in advance if their group of friends will decide to go here or there ? A possible answer would be positive stimulation, like a lower price for in advance booking tickets. The organizer quickly measures the overwhole success of the event, and early birds who can take decisions pay less than last minute zappers. Sounds fair, doesn't it?
Nir_ (17/02/2008)
Minda, Julian,

Thanks for the feedback about no-shows. We know it's a real issue for organisers, and Oded and I are breaking our heads on how to manage it...

...What think?

Nir, I wonder if the outcome of such a system would simply be that people steer clear of Glocals events!  I can understand peoples' frustration when they work so hard to organise events and people don't turn up, but suspending or blacklisting people who may have perfectly good excuses for a)not turning up to an event and b)not being able to contact anyone about it, sounds a bit excessive.  Do organisers make it clear enough that no-shows are unacceptable?  Maybe it should be the first point made when an event is posted?  I don't think I've ever not showed once I've committed to a Glocals event, but maybe once the event is over a certain size, people assume no-one will notice or care whether they turn up.  Or has spelling out in no uncertain terms how difficult it makes life for the organisers been tried and failed?

a) I agree
b) I actually wonder what could possibly prevent 50 people to connect to Internet and send an email to appologize, even 3 days later? Did a coach full of Glocalers fell down a cliff without no one noticing? :doze:

I think that the other explanation - they assumed no one would notice - is far more realistic, and adds to my theory, men can't be trusted ;)

personally, i always ask people only to sign up if they're really going to come, and in the info email i send out later, i also ask them to let me know if something does come up (because sometimes it does), and now also inform them that no-shows will be listed. how much clearer can you get?
