Hi - can anyone give me a users opinion on the various E-book formats available? I travel quite a lot, and want to cut down on luggage. I read a LOT, so wanted to get a format where I can download a lot of books of all different kinds. I'm also not into gadgets at all, so something easy to use will suit me best. Anyone with any experience who could give me some advice? NB - a Kindel won't work due to the need for a US connection.
Any advice most welcome.

Hey Renia,
Not sure where my other post went, but Amazon just announced that they will be selling the Kindle worldwide and it will be able to download via the air overseas in case you were still in the market. I love my US only kindle.....

Hi Dan,
Thanks very much, this is really helpful. I often have 24 hour door-to-door trips, and there is only so much time you can spend working on the plane!! A little downtime is also nice.
Can you clarify for me - so now I could order the Kindle itself (i.e. the reader) on Amazon, and get it shipped outside the US. And the books...I can download in e-format from Amazon also? Can I also download them from other online bookstores (Boarders etc).
Can all formats be 'read' on the Kindle, or does it need a special software format?
Sorry - I'm totally techno-illiterate, but know what I want. If its a question of carrying an extra bag just for reading materials, or carrying an e-book reader, I'm willing to learn about technology...
Thanks for the tips, thats been really useful.

the kindle only works with books purchased from Amazon -- the international model should be on the market soon and be available from non-US Amazon sites so you wouldn't need to have a US based credit card to make purchases. it should also enable you to download wirelessly from a variety of countries. The current kindle still "works" outside the US, you just have to connect it to your computer to download books and you would have to have a US credit card to make purchases.
the Sony e-reader I believe works with other on-line bookshops like Borders and Barnes & Noble, also if you have an iPhone it actually has an e-reader app, but the screen might be too small.

Hi, just to clarify that the international version of "Kindle" is the small size, the "Kindle DX" which has a bigger screen an more storage is still for the american market, but you can still buy it (a friend or a family living in the USA) and download the ebooks via internet through your computer as Mbgoldst wrote in the previous post.

Giullo,
I have no issues with it. The screen is very clear, not like a monitor (not too back lit). It is much easier than reading on a monitor.

Hi, you can even read outside (ie. in the park), and the battery last about 2 weeks before recharging (if you have the wireless off).
