It's possible, with enough determination, to assemble regional train connections and get to Milan using ordinary point-of-sale tickets.  It'll take 6+ hours.  There's are six trains per day running from Brig to Domodossola; from there you're in the Italian train system and you've got a number of options for getting to Milan.
