Canada Club June Hike
Spring has sprung and the mountains are quickly shedding the last remnants of their winter snow and the spring flowers are pushing through on the peaks. To ring in the new season the Canada Club will be organizing a day hike on June 5th, 2010 in the Jura mountains.
When:
Saturday, June 5th. (Sunday will be a back-up day if weather is an issue on Saturday)
Where:
The hike will start at the Monts Jura ski hill at La Faucille. To get there, head towards the French town of Bex and follow the signs for Monts Jura ski area. Once through Bex you climb towards the Col de la Faucille (for those with a GPS in your car you can set it for Mijoux, just make sure you don't go further than the Col de la Faucille).
After reaching the top of the Jura there is a road to the left at the far (north side) of the Col that takes you to the ski lift area. There is a restaurant, hotel and the EFS building with ample parking. That will be our meeting point. It's about a 30min drive from Geneva and is very scenic. We will leave at 10:00am sharp, so would ask that people arrive by 9:45.
Description of the Hike:
The total hiking time will be approximately 4 hours plus time for breaks and lunch (so about 5 hours total). There is a small elevation gain of about 200m to reach the top of the ridge at Mont Rond. From there we hike down the ridge line overlooking Lac Leman and across to the Mont Blanc range. Our destination will be Le Colomby de Gex for a spectacular view at 1688m. This is the halfway point and we will stop for lunch here before heading back on the north side of the ridge towards the car park.
What you will need:
Hiking boots/shoes with a sturdy sole
Backpack
1 Litre of water per person
Lunch/snacks
Layered clothing (including warm clothes and something ideally windproof)
Sunscreen/Sunglasses/Hat
Optional:
Hiking poles
Binoculars (there are a lot of Chamoix living along the ridge line and birds)
Rain gear (if weather looks uncertain)
First aid kit
