I'm planning to go sometime end of summer. Can anyone suggest the best way to get there? Is is best to fly into Rome and take train down along the coast?
Also if there are other suggested places worth visiting around there, pls let me know!

there's one that leaves around 9 and arrives in the morning in Florence. It probabily stops already close to there, but if not, then florene 5 terre is really close.
It's not super comfy but you don't waste any day time travelling and it can be quite cheap!

OK, it means spending half a day on the train, but there's just one change in Milan and one in Genoa.
We drove to Corniglia for the Easter holiday, and the views are spectacular, but the roads are so winding and narrow that I was too terrified to look out the window half the time. We stayed in a family-owned pensione and the food, cooked by Nonna herself, was mouth-wateringly good. Only later did we learn that the good Signora offers week-long cooking courses to selected Swiss and German tour groups. There are plenty of walks to offset all the marvelous eating!
Have a great time and be sure to take sturdy shoes. While some of the trails are flat gravel, others are quite rugged.

If my memory's still intact, cars aren't too popular there so best is to go by train, or by ferry, from Genoa. Spectacular views and wonderful walking trails.
A google search will give you many useful links. Enjoy.

Hello YouMeCo,
There is a very nice path along the sea, starting from Vernazza, that goes all the way down through all villages of the cinque terre. It is easy and very beautiful, you never cross any road, and walk among the vineyards. If you get tired of walkig you can take the train, it also goes down the coast through all the villages.
About getting there, I went by train, and don't know about the plane.
One thing to be careful about is that this place has become very famous , so it is better to make reservation for the nights in advance, mostly if you go there in the summer.
Have fun
Ichi

i can't wait to go!!! I think I will take the train, via Milan to get there. I'll be in touch with some of you to get further info on this option, which hopefully won't be too painful.
I may even ask shortly if anyone out there is interested in going along at end of the summer :)
