Diving talk - Okinawa (Japan) or ...

Hello to all scuba divers or sea lovers,

Here is an idea that my dive buddy and I have been talking - a dive trip to Okinawa (a very southern island of Japan) which provides semi-tropcial water (big fish and underwater ruins, etc), white sand beaches, amasing local Okinawa food (& Japanese food), and cultural experiences. Its richness of dive sites are not known to many of divers in Europe, mainly due to the language barrier, distance, and mis-perception of "expensive" price (not really in fact). If anyone interested in (first of all) a talk about it, or any other diving destinations, drop a line please. We haven't fixed any concrete plan yet, but are enjoying simulation of such a trip so far.  Cheers!

Kon nichi wa Mr.Diver,

Actually, I am going to Okinawa soon (in the end of the year) after my Sharm El Sheik trip!!!

Yes lucky me...but I have no idea where I will be as it's my mother who arraged the trip from Tokyo.

Any recommendation about the dive spots, dive shops etc.?

I could "tâter le terrain" for future Glocal's group holidays!?!?

But I think, for most of European people, Okinawa is a bit too far, too exotic as a desitination...

Why not Seichelles, Ile Reunion, Sri Lanka or even Exmoth in WA???

Dozo yoro shiku!

Kon'nichiwa! Thanks for the reply. Please do bring back some practical information from Okinawa. I envy you, honestly. If you have flexible and sufficient time there this time, I would strongly recommend to make and excursion to Ishigaki-jima from Okinawa by boat or domestic flight easily arrangeable on site. At Ishigaki-jima, if it is the season, you will see a large school of Hammerhead sharks - quite a spectaculours, and maybe Mantas. There are quite a few websits about diving in Okinawa, almost all good ones in Japanese that I believe you can easily look into. In my view, Okinawa could be even better than Maldive for diving. These days, flight to Okinawa from Geneva, costs somehow CHF1000-CHF1500. Using a Japanese airline gives any one segmental domestic flight without any extra charge - e.g., Tokyo-Okinawa. Traveling time from Geneva to Japan would be some 15 hours including unavoidalbe trasit(s). I would say, 2 weeks dive trip in and around Okinawa would cost CHF3500 all inclusive, that said, of course if Japanese knowledge and access to information are taken advantage. This price could be about the same as a resort dive trip around Europe for the same period of time after all! One full delicious "Japanese dinner" which costs only CHF10-15 is so easy to find that Europeans are usually not familiar with unfortunately. I would say to non-Japanese divers in Europe, why not take advantage also of exotic food and cultural experiences in Japan during a dive trip. Two birds with one stone. The services for diving provided any dive centre in Okinawa/Japan are the TOP class of the world. Not to mention dive centres' facilities, too. Other dive trip destinations you mention are also interesting, quite worthy to look into. Let's have a discussion, inviting others Glocals, over a drink one day. I have some other diver friends who would love to join. Yoroshiku. Kazan
