Driving over from Ecosse

So when me and the family come over in the  NewYear, we're gonna bring the car.. Decided it will be easier with all the junk we'll have plus two young kids.. We'll likely do it over a couple of days and overnight stops ..

So what's the recommended route? Through the tunnel and follow the motorway.. Take a long ferry to south of france and drive north.. Any ideas for over nights?  We'll be with a three year old and a three month old so just straight driving isn't an option.

I don't have much experience driving in the UK, but from Calais to Geneva is pretty straightforward. A boat to the South of France would have to go around Britanny, which can't be shorter than the tunnel.

For a place overnight - I think you'll be passing through Rheims, the capital of the Champagne area. Great city, and you can visit a cellar if you're interested. From there it will be 5 hours to Geneva. But I think it really depends on when you pass through the tunnel what makes more sense.

I would recommend the ferry rather than the tunnel . It gives a break in the driving esp if coming from Scotland.  Not sure how many hours a day you plan to travel but the tunnel is not interesting - you can hardly stretch your legs.  You can usually drive straight on to the ferry and weather permitting it is a pleasant crossing.

For overnights I would try for something simple which is on the motorway rather than start looking for something in a town.

Finally coming into Geneva is a nice drive coming over the Jura from Dijon but only if roads are clear of snow

John - not sure if you have already made your travel plans. If not, may I suggest getting the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, and then driving down? I have done this a couple of times and it cuts out a lot of driving, and the overnight ferry gives you a good chance to rest.

From Amsterdam, I have driven through Belgium / Luxembourg / France, and have also taken a more easterly route through Germany, overnighting in Baden Baden.

If I were to do it again, I would go for the Belgian, Lux, French route as the roads seemed to be in better condition, athough there were about 70 eur of road tolls.

Whatever way you decide to travel, I hope you have a safe journey.

Thanks peoples!

We have indeed decided on the ferry to Amsterdam then down through Lux, Belg, France.. It's to avoid the long haul for the kids, who in February, one will be just three years and the other will be just three months!

Going by rough timings, our overnight in France will be somewhere around Nancy. We won't be doing any sightseeing so trying to find a basic hotel right on the motorway.

It'll be an adventure .. My experience of driving on the wrong side of the road is rather limited  :)
