 From experience.....
Don't take a taxi ....unless your life cover is up to date.
Don't eat anything you haven't seen cooked (or salad)...unless you like looking at bathroom walls from a seated position...alot......,
Don't go swimming in the nile, even if the locals are in there and wave at you to join them.....again can cause an extended seated position.

apart from that you'll love it,
maybe get a lonley planet to help with the planning,

have fun!

I didnt like Cairo itself, dirty, a lot of pollution, people driving like crazy with no rules, but the Egypt museum there is amazing, with the Toutankhamon galleries, I never saw something like this…. Just amazing!!!! The pyramid’s, tray to get the ticket to Kheops, you need to book in advance i think.

Go to Memphis. There are so many places in Egipt apart of Cairo, the sea…..Luxor…Alexandria…

Good luck

Well.. I have to say I slightly disagree with the other posters. I was in Egypt last year for Christmas and New Year's and really loved it. Granted, Cairo is not your every day European city, its a different world, a different place. But thats exactly why you wanna go there!
I spent around 20 days in Egypt and 3-4 days in Cairo and have covered almost 90% of all that's to be seen. While Cairo in itself is huuge with lots to explore - the Giza Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, Islamic and Coptic sections, bazaars and souks, I would suggest you take a trip to either Luxor/Aswan or even a tour to nearby oases throught he spectacular White and black deserts.
Most hotels/hostels offer (day) trips to most of the sights.
I trust my life with Lonely Planet guides (there are worth every single cent and then some) and if you dont already have one, I suggest you get one - or I could lend you mine.

Just remember to Bargain Hard and Have Fun!
