Geneva to Lucerne recommendations?

I am planning a weekend trip from Geneva to Lucerne in mid-June. Any recommendations on reasonably priced yet nice places to stay in Lucerne close to the center of town? Also, what is the best way to travel from Geneva to Lucerne? Any suggestions for things to do in Lucerne?

Thank you!

The best way to travel? The train! Always the best way to travel in Switzerland. Go to www.cff.ch and have a look for offers, day-cards etc.

The best way to go to Luzern is via Train, for 2 hours and 50 minutes without change is unbeatable plus the very nice view on your way there.

Luzern is quite cheap and you will find hostels all over the place. Enjoy this small but beautiful city.

Things to do:
Imax, the transportation museum, the lake side is adorable, the cogwheel, go to Pilatus, their shopping street near the lake is amazing, Casino, and the tour of the town with horses... Not bad!

Enjoy!

If you want just to reach Luzern - go fastest non-stop train. If you want to make it more enjoyeable - go via Montreux with Panoramic train (via Zweisimmen).

And visit Luzern museum of transport. Funny place :)

Not sure if your mid-june was this w-e or the next, but anyway it might be useful for other people: There is a restaurant you might enjoy, called "swiss old house". You will have there a wonderful (but not so cheap, 54.- I think) schnitzel, that they will cook in front of you.

I once stayed in the youth hostel in Lucern many years ago. It was really nice and affordable. Definitely recommend the panoramic train journey, it's worth it :).

Wooden bridge and the lucerne art gallery where it shows the round picture of the war between germens and french. It's a 50ft long painting that comes to real life almost where you stand. Very interesting...

As RemyS wrote: "it might be useful for other people":

I stayed at etap this Saturday for chf 95 for double bed. The locations is not so prime but it's much cheaper then hotels in old town. It's about 10 mins walk from train station. I, however, drove and this drive was one of the adventurous I've ever had as I had no idea that I’d be driving in mountains in zigzag through clouds (yes, clouds at Furkapass).  Strongly recommend if you decide to drive. Here's the route I drove took:

I drove via Furka to Stelvio on Saturday-Sunday.

It was real fun, especially taking into account heavy clouds on and after Furka and snow on Stelvio :)

Regarding travel to Luzern by car, road via Grimsel looks like shorter one. However, Furka is much more fun, than Grimsel. Going via autobahn - fastest and dull :)
