In your shoes I would either go for southern Tuscany (Maremma) or south-eastern Sicily (the area of Ragusa, Siracusa).

Kick off by taking a look to these. If you have more questions, please ask!

A presto!

Enrico.

you may also want to consider the Liguria region.

when you say cheap, it also very much depends on the time of the year. July and August aren't cheap anywhere :) June and September definitely better, financially wise.

Be careful : we just returned from Italy where we stayed in a self-catering apartment in Stresa, Lago Maggiore, owned by an English woman married to an Italian. Her website said "from £50.-- per day" but she charged us €95.-- per day and then had the absolute gall to charge an extra €50.-- for "cleaning". This made a daily total of 117.50 per day which, for a 1 bed apartment is expensive to say the least. Nothing special either

I Airbnb-ed several times in Italy and always had excellent experiences. Before choosing an host, just check the reports by their former guests and you should avoid bad experiences.

Best
