Hey Nikola
Cheap hotels in New York are hard to find.
Check out Jazz on the Park ( www.jazzonthepark.com)
Its a hostel with dorm style rooms, and pretty cheap if youd ont mind sharing a room with some strangers.
Otherwise, if you are going for a week or more, best is to try to find a cheap apartment sublet through the various websites.
Good luck and enjoy NY.

I can think of no place with more diversity than New York and everything you want to do is totally a matter of taste. If you can narrow down what you are looking for a bit more, I'd be happy to try to point you in the right direction then.
Are you looking for great food, cheap food, nightclubs or dive bars?

I book through www.quickbook.com they have some great deals occasionally and generally offer discounts on all ranges of hotels from inexpensive to luxury.
I go to NYC 2x a year, it's where I come from, I was born and raised ther.e
If you are looking to see a broadway show, go to www.broadwaybox.com or www.playbill.com both are free if you register and you can get discount codes for shows so you can buy your tickets ahead of time instead of standing on line for the half price tix same day. And you can see what the shows are and what they are about and see if it interests you.
Another good site is www.newyork.citysearch.com. It has everything from clubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, sightseeing, shopping etc in all different price catagories if you do a sort. It gies reviews on restaurants, clubs, bars, etc.
I hope this is of help to you.

Hey Mako!
As a New Yorker myself, I would recommend checking out hotels.com. They usually have some fantastic last minute deals and you can find something for like 70 bucks a night (incredibly cheap for NYC)!! I would strongly NOT recommend Craigs List. I tried to find an apt. like that when I moved here and the people there are very unreliable. Perhaps you'll have better luck....but May is difficult because the beg. of tourist season.
As far as bars, i can recommend one GREAT place, which is the Bowery Ballroom in East Village. Absolutely fantastic!! New and upcoming bands and the quality you'll find in NYC is nothing like you'll ever find in Geneva (no offense and I lived in Geneva for a LONG time). Two floors of a sort of relaxed atmosphere with great music. Good luck and enjoy my (new) home and favorite city!!

http://gonyc.about.com/od/hotels/New_York_City_Hotels_Guide_to_New_York_City_Hotels_and_Accommodations.htm
gives good tips on short studio apartment rentals.
I'm looking into that for myself as I will be in NYC 18-27 March.
Perhaps someone on Glocals has an even better idea...

The link of Sublet.com is really good one. I found the price and location are great for apartment. It would be really good for a week long stay even just for 2 days, some of them are great. Thanks. I used to use Homeexchange.com on vacation rentals. Now you have to pay to contact the owners.

You also have to pay for sublet.com, which is 100 bucks for 3 months. I've used the service and it sucks. You can contact me via [email protected] and I'll give you names, address, and prices for hotels I have in the new Time Out magazine for NYC I just picked up a few days ago here in Manhattan. If you're still looking...
