Info about Paris, please help me!

Hi guys,

I know i'm a bit in advance, but i'm planning New Year's Eve in Paris with my boyfriend (dec, 31st is our anniversary too). It'll be the first time for both of us...

Now the problem is: there are sooooo many things to do and visit and we have just 5 days. I have a list of the things I want to see (Louvre, Tour Eiffel, Moulin Rouge, Galeries Lafayette and typical tourist's things), but the question for you is another...

When I travel I usually want to discover the place for what is it for real, and not only under the touristic aspect, guided tours etc. I'd like to know if someone knows some restaurants where we can eat something special, if there are some pubs, discos or cabaret we can't really miss, but also open air markets, romantic things like "le mur des je t'aime" or boat trips on the river...

And then... Where to spend the night of dec, 31st? Tour Eiffel? Champs Elysées? Or somewhere else?

Is there a daily card we can buy for public transports? How much does it cost?

Everything you know about Paris will be useful! I need your advices, especially if you are from Paris...

Thanks a lot in advance!

Cheers,

Ottavia

the Paris Visit travel card is perfect for those wanting to visit Paris and making unlimited, unrestricted trips around the Ile-de-France region..

each day begins at 05:30 and ends the at 05:30 the following day.

this card is valid for 1,2,3 or 5 consecutive days in zone 1-3 or 1-6.

Parisvisite .adult .1 day .       zone 1-3  :  9,00 euros

                                             zone 1-6  :  18,90 euros

You can purchase your Paris Visite travel card from ticket offices and automatic ticket machines.

At a ticket office you will be given a magnetic ticket and the accompanying non-transferable card. However, should you make your purchase at a ticket machine you will only receive the magnetic ticket. You should then request the non-transferable card at a nearby ticket office or information counter. Without this non-transferable card you will be travelling in breach of the law.

umm...  in paris, there is open-air flea market named 'Puces de Vanves'.

This open-air flea market is not as big as the one in Saint-Ouen but is nevertheless a fun place to be. Shops offer old books, old furniture and antiques. The market consists of professional shop keepers and stall owners who set up shop only on weekends. This flea market is the smallest in Paris but is a good place to pick up some interesting souvenirs to take back home. If you're lucky, you could also find something historic and original.              Open Hours: 8a-1p   Sa-Su

If you can find the hotel in Marais for that night, it will be great for you two.

The Marais is one of Paris' oldest and most dazzling quarters.

Hi Ottavia,

for the night of new year's eve... not easy to make a choice...

All Paris and visitors do gather in great numbers and in great festive mood on Champs de mars, at the foot of Eiffel Tower as well as all along Champs Elysées and on every district's -arrondissements- traditional gathering squares.  But if one has to pick the one and only location for the one and only occasion, I would go for the magic of Eiffel Tower which is illuminated by a choreography of hundreds of colour changing lights.

Maybe one point to consider is that Champs de mars is a huge parc with no pubs or restaurants to be found in the immediate vicinity, so to wrap up the eve, walking some distance is needed, all very worthwhile of course!

I spent my last new year's eve with friends at Champs Elysées and was also wonderful!... I guess the company makes it all!

So, a little in advance... Happy New Year!

Hi Ottavia,

My husband lived in Paris 3 years ago and said this guide (written by one of his professors who lived in Paris for several years) was very useful.  We did the 'very interesting walks' and they were great for discovering the city. You can print out the whole guide from the website.

One of my favorite bars in Paris (if you like rum) is called the Rhumerie off the Mabillion metro stop.  It has something like 300 types of rum ranging from 5 Euro a shot to upwards of 100 E!  They also have a large selection of cigars.

If you like chocolate you MUST go to Angelina's right off the Tuileries stop.  AMAZING for chocolate.

Happy New Year's and Happy Anniversary!
