Istanbul & Turkey for Christmas?
Since the husband and I can't get home for Christmas we were thinking of going somewhere completely new and not Christmas related for a week or so. There are some great deals for flights, with hotels, to Istanbul. Anyone got advice?
Thanks!

Hello ! I have been many times in Istanbul, a magical town, and at various times of the year. including... Xmas and New year's Eve... Istanbul is a wonderful town, scenery, people, food, shopping, visits, bosphorus... is is just great! there are very good deals for instance with voyages-sncf.com, with flight and hotel. If you book your flights separately, I can recomend you an on-line company for hotels www.hotels.rus.com... I got a nice hotel for 40 euros instaed of over 100 !!! at the end of the year, the weather can be pretty cold and humid... you can even have snow!!! and the scenery becomes still more beautiful !!!

Well there are many deals for Istanbul. Winter is not a peak season so you can get good deals for Xmas. When booking hotels ask for:
Taksim area: if you are into bar hopping, cafes, restaurants, and all fun stuff and still clase by to historical areas and museums...
Sultanahment area: if you are into history, museums, oriental cuisine and all.
Do not forget to check out the Ortakoy area (great food and club scenes) and Nisantasi (designer shopping and clubbing of high street style)

If you are into food choices are endless. But my favorites Changa (can be expensive but it is listed as one of the best restaurants in Europe), 360 (See Istanbul 360 and have good food veray reasonably priced),Banyan (Asian Fusion food). If you wish to try Turkish food the streets are full of zillion of cafes, kebab places, etc. But if you wish to see authentic Turkish and Ottoman style food go for Haci Abdullah (but they have no alcohol served in that place as far as I remember). I think also Intercontinental Hotel has some good authentic Turkish food as well. There are others but cannot remember all the names and places. And you should check Xmas deals in Istanbul as many places do offer Xmas and New Year deals although they can be bit expensive. Not more than Geneva though.

Clubbing scene is very good if you are into that type of thing. There is Babylon with good programs. And more. Good luck. You can ask me more I lived in Istanbul...
