I was hoping that someone else would answer your question as the last time I was in Jamaica was about eight-ten years ago.

In a few words, Jamaica is not the safest place to be wandering around. I would imagine that you are going to a resort. Ask them for guidance on what to do and not do (and follow it to the letter!). If you would like to go into Kingston to look around or shop, do so only with an organized group.

I did a quick Google on Jamiaca +Kingston +crime. Here is a link that you should have a look at. I agree with the general direction of his comments.

Good luck and enjoy your trip. It is a very beautiful island. The people are in general very nice.

Honestly, I would skip Kingston.  The payoff is not worth the stress.  The only thing somewhat interesting is the Bob Marley musueum...but my husband who is a big Bob Marley fan found it underwhelming.

Jamaica's beauty lies in it's rural areas.  I was in Kingston recently and vowed never to return to Jamaica...of course once my plane landed in Montego Bay...I was in love again.

BTW I am originally from Jamaica so if you need any info feel free to ask!:D
