Kerala, India
I'm off there for a couple of weeks and wondered if anyone has been there, and if so, can I pluck your brains about the place. Gladly buy you a coffee/lunch.
Also, if anyone has a guide book for India or even better Kerala, could I borrow it for a couple of weeks? Amongst my many News Years resolutions was a moratorium on further purchases of Lonely Planet Guides. My shelves can't take anymore!
Thanks,
Barry

Its a great place and this season will be perfect. Go to incredible India website. If you are going via delhi, do drop in at the Kerala tourism office. This is a goveernment-run tourism office and you are least likely to be cheated, which in delhi is pretty common. I am saying this because i belong to delhi. If you are travelling on budget, the government-run hotels should be your preference. But if you want to live it up, there are several nice properties in, yes, thekkady. I was at Taj resorts once and it was fantastic. Although if you want a more local flavour, head out along the beach for your meals. There's a boat you can hire to go along the periyar and you can catch glimpses of wildlife along the river. Some of the guides at Periyar tiger reserve were tiger poachers at one time and are now helping censervation efforts and earning a livelihood from tourism.
And I picked up spices from thekkady from one of the places recommended by people at Taj, and these were really good. You could get banana chips for people back home, these are delicious.
Food is generally good in Kerala. Its the only place in India where you can eat beef, cooked Indian style, of course.
Best way to travel around the state is by road and most people speak English, so you can get around by yourself. Either hop on the public transport buses or hire a motorbike! Have fun :-)

are Kovalam and Varkala. The sunset from Varkala beach is amazing. Another trip I enjoyed is to Kanyakumari (Cape Comorin), at the bottom of India where three Oceans meet. It's also a good place to have Ayurvedic treatments. However, it really depends on what sort of experience you want to have of Kerala. South Indian food is delicious too, as long as you like coconut oil. Luckily I do.
Enjoy!
