As I will be in Locarno for the film festival (Aug.6-16) I'll be looking for comfortable but reasonably inexpensive digs- any ideas ?

Hi Kompo,
As a festival goer myself, you should try the youth hostel found in Locarno, usually booked solid by March, but try your luck....

In Bellinzona is a nice youth hostel -

But if you are looking for a place in the centre of Lucarno I could recommand this one as well:
Stella d'Italia

It's nothing special, but central and tidy.
