Roaming R O M E and round there...
Ciao tutti!
Anybody got any tips on things to do in and around Rome?
Especially over the festive period - 22 Dec - 2 Jan.
Grazie!
PS And if you will be there and would like to hook up with some Glocals going Roman whilst there, or would like to join us in travels, just drop a line.

Hi SimSim...What a great place, think i would apply that label to Italy. I lived on the outskirts of Rome for 4 years, loved the place.
Will try and come up with a few ideas.
Cheers

Would need to look up the exact road but around Castel Gandolfo (which is also a very pretty place) there is a road where if you stop your car on the incline and leave the handbrake off the car will roll up hill.
Same as electric Bray in Scotland.
OK its an optical illusion but it looks very real. Have been to both.

For sure will go to the Xmas markets. And will be staying right near Trastevere. The car thing sounds intriguing...
Any favourite restaurants or other haunts?

Little kids surrounding you begging, prodding..next thing they have stolen something. Never happened to me i think because i was aware of them. You need to be rude and aggressive if approached.
Was some time now since i lived there so would be difficult to recommend particular restaurants and generally the places i frequented were nearer the area i lived. Am sure you wont have any trouble finding some good places though. Am even a little envious.

Rome is rich with dining possibilities. It is rare to get disappointed. Some suggestions:
La Pergola
La Rosetta
Agata e Romeo
Il Matriciano
Vivendo
Il Bacaro

For good vegan choices ( :-), see I remember )
Arancia Blu
Il Margutta RistorArte (one of the best vegan in Europe)

For hanging out - Alexanderplatz on via Ostia (Jazz momentos everywhere, bar + food + good live music). Taverna Campo was another good spot. I found Piazzas to be nice place to hang out with friends (Navona etc)... there are bars nearby.

Some tips for Rome:

1.On of the best (cheap) one is youth station: www.youthstation.it
some more hostels are on www.romaturismo.it (most of them are around Termini...I don't like that area so much)
if you are going by car, you can try also Camping Roma: www.ecvacanze.it

2. Usually there's no need for reservation. just wake up very early if you want to visit Vatican museum.

3.Traveling within Rome is not that easy: traffic is heavy, buses are crowded, taxi are expensive, bikes are not so much considered...so here there are some tips:
-avoid traveling in rush hour (7.00 - 9.00 and 16.00 - 19.00)
-if possible, take a bus or metro, but try to avoid bus line 64. Watch out of pickpockets!
-night buses run quite often (20-30 min during the week, 10-15 min on weekend)
-try to avoid driving within the city...it can be a very strange experience!

4. Parking places are notoriously few. the usual price is 1 Euro/hour. some parking around metro station cost 2 Euro/day

5. Almost everything is in the center, so try to stay close to it. good areas are Piazza Bologna-via Nomentana, Viale Trastevere-Viale Marconi and Prati.

6. Good Local dishes: Carbonara, Amatriciana...you have just to choose!

7. Some good restaurants: S. Lorenzo or Trastevere!

8. A night walk from Piazza Navona to Campo dei fiori and then Trastevere recommended.

Good Luck.
