Romance Requested
Hi everyone,

I'm in the middle of planning a 12-day trip to London, Paris and Venice as a complete surprise for my girlfriend in the US (hopefully she doesn't read these forums and, yes, it will be with me :P ).  It will be her first time out of the country, we got her passport already under a different pretext last year, and she considers these cities to be fairy tales she will never achieve in her lifetime (e.g. England - where men still run around in green tights in Sherwood Forest)

As a Brit, I've got London covered, Paris is familiar, but Venice is virgin territory for me.  I'm looking for great suggestions for nice hotels in Venice primarily, but Paris too.  By nice, I mean middle of the range / upmarket-ish in terms of pricing, but definitely romantic!  No art deco style, more traditional and cosy, preferably with style, and in the heart of the city.

Will take all suggestions, including any useful web links you may know of.  Thanks, awfully!

Ricardo.

Thanks Isa, guess that whole trip to Kilimanjaro will just have to be put on ice (no pun intended). As for Hayes post. I wasn't quite what position to adopt :w00t:

Isa, join the club (cardiac insufficiency) ... open heart surgery resulting in 6 bypasses following a heart attack 2 years ago at age 44 have given me a whole new passion for life .... which is most definitely for the living, and has humbly served to enhance my natural desire for style and romantic gestures.

As for the title, I am so innocent and lovable, I did not even consider the dark side of my title.... until I hit "post" ...gulp - "will I be banned?" ...

For a central landmark location, consider hotels near Piazza San Marco. The most convenient and relaxing ambience is offered by hotels along the canals. I have stayed at Westin Europa. It is a decent place. Other nearby hotels that may satisfy some of your wishes are: Bauer, Monaco, Metropole. Flora is another possibility, but it is some distance from San Marco. Many hotels in Venice look simple from the outside, remarkably ornate inside (Art Deco seems common).

Good restaurants to consider: da Fiore, Al Covo, Ai Tre Spiedi, and The Met (in Metropole hotel). Some tables at the Met offer nice views of Venice... sunset and the rest. The food was very good at da Fiore. If you stay at Monaco, you will find Harry's Bar right across the street. Try it if you both have time - really good drinks, and a place frequented in past by famous novelists.

Best travels!

Saxon,

I agree with Colorado, though my best stay was at the Monaco, with, as he says, Harry's bar across the way - a must visit place, even for one drink! To be honest I find Venice so compact that everywhere easy to get too, though I liked the Monaco because it was right on the front of the canal. The room was lovely and I don't recall it being too brash, actually quite teasteful.

Hi,

not many tour books talk of it, and it really is the most amazing street in Paris... it's called Rue Mouffetard. It's considered the oldest and best kept secret in Paris, has wonderful stores, and cafés... typical Parisian ambiance assured. Plus it's right next to the Quartier Latin, THE place to hang out...

To everyone that provided great responses - a huge THANK YOU (or even Merci Beaucoup)!

DrCat - WOW - what an absolutely wild recommendation on the Villa Royale - I could not resist - and she will love it - so we are now staying there for 3 nights.

Cynthia - I have never heard of that street - but will most definitely check it out.

Scherkie - so sorry - as much as I would love to take all the beautiful ladies with me, I do wish to survive the trip :)

For everyone else - thanks - sincerely.  London, Paris, Zurich and Venice - including relaxing train travel through the beautiful Alps.  It has morphed into a Mother's Day surprise (May 11th here in the US), and she has been receiving 3 clues a day for 1 week as to her "gift" ... her family will help her put the puzzle together on Sunday - and we leave Wednesday (LOL - I had to give her time to shop for the "right clothes" and pack!).

Hello everyone! This is the girlfriend :D

I just found out about the trip yesterday as my Mother's Day gift~ to put it mildly, I was blown away:w00t:

Within 48 hours SaxonChap and I will be starting our 2 week trip through Europe, staying at the finest hotels (which I see many of you recommended), and he'd already arranged for the children to be taken care of while we're gone. They're finally old enough, 16 and 12, where I feel alright about leaving them for any time in the care of family.

Saxon showed me all of your posts today, so I wanted to make sure to say thank you to everyone who made suggestions, as many were chosen as destinations.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks one of us can pop back in with an update.

Thanks again,

Cabnfevr
