Hi, I stayed in an apartment at
VIA DE" CIANCALEONI 45 A - 00184 - ROMA

The owner's email is [email protected].

I really loved it. It had 2 rooms (so up to 4 people can stay there), very central (between Termini rail station and Colleseum) and yet it was in a quiet area, very clean, and Silvia was most helpful.  You can check my review on tripadvisor.  That time she charged like 120 Euro a night, but if you are returning it's  possible to have a discount.  I can highly recommend the place.

as for where to go, it's a hard choice, but if it's your first time there, I'd start by taking one of those daily hop on-off bus-tours, to go around and decide on what you want to do (especially if you don't have much time). you can get the tickets near the rail station.  Enjoy Rome - such a great place to go!

Hoi Amber,

Depending on how you are going there, the SBB tends to have quite cheap train/hotel combos for a lot of destinations and by train you get to see the full trip instead of just airports and clouds (if unlucky ;) As such, go to the travel office there and ask them what kind of offers they have for you, you might be surprised. They also tend to have better offers for the younger folks amongst us which could reduce the prices even more.

Note also that Youth Hostels tend to be another option you could look into, but those really depends if you can handle not sleeping due to some other folks making too much annoyance.... (which is the reason I just pony up and go to at least something that qualifies as a real hotel/motel ;)

If you can't sleep with noise, then Rome might be a bit tricky at times ;)

But indeed a youth hostel will be even more tricky as well, youths like to have fun and make noise, and especially in shared rooms that can become annoying.

For a hotel check http://www.expedia.com/ just fill in Rome and the period you want to be there and sort on price. Anything listed there should be okayish. The average of 60EUR/night is quite reasonable too (even SBB won't that down too much if you take the train combo ticket).  Do check where they are located, as Rome is huge, think Amsterdam times ten thus if you are only there shortly it might pay off to take a hotel downtown close to the touristy things.

For flights check http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ for figuring out the cheapest flight you are looking at anything between 130 and 400 CHF for a round trip with Alitalia and some others and it is only a 1,5 hour flight, thus that is not too bad, though you have to consider being at the airport about an hour in advance and that it will take you another hour to get from the airport into Rome, thus say 3,5 hours to get from Geneva to Rome city (airports around rome are outside of town and thus you'll need to take taxi/bus/train to get downtown). Train will take you considerably longer upto 15 hours.... thus if you do not care for the view or getting out along the way, plane is likely the better option.
