Hey. I am travelling to San Francisco then New York at the end of this week. What are your must see things in San Francisco and outside (I will be renting a car for 1-2 days), and in New York? Any advice?

SFO - take a cable car to Fisherman's warf, get out to Hwy 1 on the coast road south of SF, wander the city by foot-(lots of great neat little stores), cross the Golden Gate, take a walk in the Japense Garden (near Golden Gate park), look at the archetecture of the city houses, try some sourdough bread . . .
As for NYC, just find yourself your very own "local deli" and eat there every day - takes a couple of days and they'll treat you like a regular.

you gotta drive the famous windy road that steve mcqueen did in some film.... i paid a taxi to do it ... scared the bejeesus outta me.
Wharf is good too... the bridge etc.... maybe whale viewing trip....
there are some trendy bars there and good restaurants in town too.
In NYC depends on your budget,,,, but you gotta try Sushi Samba on Christopher Str...trendy eating and pretty gals...ditto L' Esquina restaurant for upmarket mexican with models and a dance floor...
then head into meatpackers district for some roof top bars above a hotel..sorry name escapes me but its a busy one... or if youre near grand central try whisky blue.. a bar behind the waldorf...its trendy and normally packed with gals.

I could advise for NYC but the list would be too long! How long are you staying there, what's your budget and what kind of advices are you expecting? (restaurants, nightlife, or museum, touristic places to see,....)

I will be there 5 days and 5 nights. I'm not so much a fan of very touristy places but give me your best pics and I will adjust accordingly. Thanks Catalin.

Two great U.S. cities...
San Francisco:
For a bit of history check out The Haight corner of Haight & Ashbury St. (60's Beat movement HQ). Enjoy a diner experience at Magnolia Pub (1398 Haight St) for one of San Fran's best-rated burger.
Fisherman's Warf and Alcatraz (watch Clint Eastwood's Escape from Alcatraz (1979) prior to go if you haven't seen it.
If you're out of time definitely The Haight...
New York City:
Walk around and look up at the buildings roof intricate architecture...it might give you a kink in the neck at the end of the day but it's worth the sight..;)
- MOMA (Museum of Modern Art)...check out the exhibit.
- Walk down Broadway W, turn on Grand St. you will cross Little Italy (great for lunch) and Chinatown great for dinner.
- Tribeca (feel the NY vibe...and eat/drink/shop),
NY pop spot to grab a bite/drink: www.theodeonrestaurant.com/
For more info feel free to email.
Cheers & enjoy!

Would you need to reserve way in advance at those places?

not as sushi samba just get the concierge to call ahead, but possibly at l'Esquina (which looks like a caravan kebab shop parked against a building but as you enter you are sent through the "wall" down though a kitchen into the basement of the adjoining house and into a underground resto which in itself is trendy, and made better by the presence of the haute couture crowd...

the one on the corner of Christopher St and Bleekers in the Village on the lower west side is the best one for the "crowd". best Sushi/sashimi and surf and turf in the city to my mind.
Then you could try the famous Sparks steak house that had a bunch of mafia shootings back in the day...if you like meat the size of your plate that is...

finally if you like trendy martini cocktails and super trendy bars, try the bar of the HUDSON Hotel up near the Trump tower... very hip place for a drink. The hotel itself though has probably the smallest rooms in town (ie feet almost in the shower)...

Catalin - I haven't been to Alcatraz, and I regret it.
I still think it'd be cool to see it (before it get turned into a shopping mall) ;P
