Of course you have to visit Dioklecijanova palace which is in the centre of the city. Like most of croatian towns and cities, Split is a monument city. I don't know about restaurants but famous sandy beach is Bacvice.
I would recommend you to visit one of nearby islands Solta, Brac, Hvar, Korcula and Vis - there are cool day trips with a boat. Make sure to try sea food and blitva in olive oil on island Korcula (if you like sea food). Korcula is such an amazing island and a city!
