Things to do in Scandinavia?

Hi everyone,

Someone has good insights about what to do / where to go in scandinavia? Please send links to video content or good reading. How long would you spend in each place would be very helpful.

Looking forward to all your input:D

Cheers,

GF

You should definetly go to Cph..

Nyhavn (New Harbour/english) is filled with people in spring/summer, check out the freetown of Christiania and end the day at A Porta for dinner and clubbing.

Happy stay in CPH!

Hey there, how do you nordic people travel up there in Europe? What means do you use to go from Oslo and Amsterdam, or Helsinki and Stockholm for example? Is better to take the plain (obviously with no vulcanic ash issue) or heading by train?

Tips are very much appreciated!

Many thanks in advance.

Hi there,

We just got back from Sweden and Norway.

Norwegian offers good rates to fly from Geneva to Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen.

In Sweden we travelled up north by train, overnight and with sleeper coaches. They were good, cheaper than SAS, Norwegian was fully booked. The train goes to northern Sweden and Norway, beyong the arctic circle it was a beautiful ride.

In Norway, we took the bus from Narvik to Bodo, the second-most specatucular ride in the world (the first is trans-Himalayan, according to me). Then a combination of flight, bus, and train to get you to Oslo. I made booking by phone with the train company, they speak English. Bus timetable at Nor-way.no, they are efficient. There is also Wideroe flight company, if you don't find seats on Norwegian.

Other option is to take the Hurtigruten cruise along the Norwegian coast, a bit expensive. Haven't done it yet, but intend doing so.

We were lucky to see the Northern lights in Sweden, but it was earlier in the year. I guess in the summer you could go up north for the midnight Sun.

If you have credit card, you will not need to change the currency at all. The accept CC everwhere, including in the bus.

Have fun.

Hey gatafunk,

I'm Swedish and I've lived in Stockholm most of my life, so I'd like to think I got some inside knowledge.

One thing at the top of my mind - Stockholms archipelago. There are many different ways to see it, everything from speedboat to slow cruises. The most amazing experiencing you get is if you rent your own boat, since you can basically overnight at any island outside of Stockholm thanks to Sweden's Right of Public Access (http://www.sverigeturism.se/smorgasbord/smorgasbord/natrecspo/nature/every.html).

Tell me if you need any more advice.

Hi!

I´m Swedish so here is some advice..

If I were you I would fly from Oslo to Stockholm and then take the ferry to Helsinki.

In Stockholm I can recommend to visit "Gamla Stan" an old part of the town and also Djurgården, where its really nice to walk around, have a pic-nic et.c. The south part "Söder" is also nice, a bit more relaxed with lots of cafés, restaurants and shops.

Go to the ferry between Stockholm and Helsinki/Turku. It is all but waste of time. Cultural shock especially when travelling during weekends or during other crowded season. :)

Oh yeah, that ferry from Stokholm to Turku is quite fun indeed. Took that once while driving from Switzerland to Finland.

Speaking of which, the day I returned, it took me 23 hours to drive back home to Switzerland in one sitting (ok, 21 hours of driving, 2 hours adding gas and taking a break at the gas stations... just over 1900km's). Got off the ship in Stockholm at around 6am, was home at 5am :)

Now THAT was one great trip!

Dear travellers,

What can you do during the month of August around Stockholm, Helsinki or Copenhagen? What about live music festivals?
