Travelling to Tibet - kindly advise
Dear all,

I will be travelling to China (Beijing, Dalian) and Tibet at the end of September. I would very much welcome your advice and any tips on the ‘must-see’s and ‘must-do’s as well as things to avoid. I am especially interested in everything regarding travelling in Tibet.
I thank you for your precious advice!
Wishing you a wonderful rest of the summer!
Kind regards,

Benita

Hello,

I may be able to give you tips, but it depends how long you are planning to travel for. Dalian, Beijing, Tibet are all very far away! I did a trip from Beijing to the tibetan border a few years back, saw some wonderfull places on the way, but it took me over 6 months ... and I did not even make it to Tibet.

My son is returning from China in a week and he's just spent a month hitchhiking in Tibet - he also knows much of China well, so I'll ask him to reply. He'll also be writing the story of his travels on GenevaLunch.com, so even if he's too rushed to give advice (he's here for just a few days, then off to Canada), you should be able to pick up tips from that. Tibet is truly huge, so allow plenty of time, especially for the return trip, where getting tickets back from Tibet is tough if you didn't do it ahead.

I would love to visit Tibet in not too distant future.

Friends tell me about the Sky Train that started last year. This express train is an engineering marvel. With it, one can reach Lhasa within 48 hours from Beijing. From Lhasa you can get to Everest base camp in about 4 to 5 days.

Exploring small towns and experiencing local culture along the way would make the trip longer and more interesting.

We've just published a story on GenevaLunch about hitchhiking in Tibet, that you might find helpful. You can always contact Liam, the author, through his web site, which is listed there. http://www.genevalunch.com/genevalunchrethink/2007/08/thumbing.html

The train trip is expensive and very long, but so is any other way across Tibet - study the map well! and then allow plenty of time.
