Trip it Italy early December
My friends and I are thinking of going to Italy around the first 10 days of December. We are thinking of traveling all the way to the Southern parts with stops in Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples etc (not necessarily in all of those places).

I don't know much about Italy. Can you tell me what the weather will be like then? What events are going on? Where must we go? What's the best way of traveling there: train? plane? We are on a slight budget though so no Ritz-Carlton for us this time :)

Ok here's the first part of what you need to know ...
Weather: the weather in Italy changes a lot depending on the region. SOmetimes in Milan is below 0 while in the south is around 10 degress. It rarely goes way below 0 in the cities, so my suggestion is .. normal winter clothes that you would wear here in geneva .. and dress with multiple layers in case you go to the south and it's colder.
How to travel: The cheapest way to get to Milan and or Rome could be both flying (ebookers, and easy jet have good offers) or the train to Milan (takes 4.5hs if there's a good offers, or you are younger then 26). But from then on .. it depends on how much time and money you wanna spend on the road. Internal trains can be cheap (regional ones) but quite slow ... or fast (2,5 hs Florence Milan) but more expensive (anything from 40 to 75 euros and more). Renting a car could be a good option, but consider the highway fees.
If you cannot find any good offers online for hotels, the other option is bed and breakfast, this website http://www.bed-and-breakfast.it/ has the whole list of the 'certified' ones and i've tried quite a few myself and they are usually nice and cheap.
As for which cities to visit and what to do ... coming next!

Vale

it will be perhaps difficult to visit north nad south italy in only ten days
my suggestion: take a plane to rome and visit the south, it will be less cold: visiting rome of course, take the train (25 euros from rome to napoli) and visit the area around napoli with the local train very cheap (http://www.vesuviana.it/ ): vesuvio, pompei,
sorrento,... and of course take the boat to visit Capri and Ischia

in the south if you decide to rent a car, remember that italians seem to not have the same driving rules as us;o) and it's quite difficult to find places to park, and also tourists cars are often 'visited' to stole cameras, etc.

as you seem to know the website couchsurfing, you can use it also to ask for accomodation (if you and your friends are not too numerous, and if each one creates his own profile and accepts to host and/or show around in his own town) and ask for tips or events and meet local people who can you visit places that tourists never see (as I had the chance to do last spring)

Some tips for Rome:

1.On of the best (cheap) one is youth station: www.youthstation.it
some more hostels are on www.romaturismo.it (most of them are around Termini...I don't like that area so much)
if you are going by car, you can try also Camping Roma: www.ecvacanze.it

2. Usually there's no need for reservation. just wake up very early if you want to visit Vatican museum.

3.Traveling within Rome is not that easy: traffic is heavy, buses are crowded, taxi are expensive, bikes are not so much considered...so here there are some tips:
-avoid traveling in rush hour (7.00 - 9.00 and 16.00 - 19.00)
-if possible, take a bus or metro, but try to avoid bus line 64. Watch out of pickpockets!
-night buses run quite often (20-30 min during the week, 10-15 min on weekend)
-try to avoid driving within the city...it can be a very strange experience!

4. Parking places are notoriously few. the usual price is 1 Euro/hour. some parking around metro station cost 2 Euro/day

5. Almost everything is in the center, so try to stay close to it. good areas are Piazza Bologna-via Nomentana, Viale Trastevere-Viale Marconi and Prati.

6. Good Local dishes: Carbonara, Amatriciana...you have just to choose!

7. Some good restaurants: S. Lorenzo or Trastevere!

8. A night walk from Piazza Navona to Campo dei fiori and then Trastevere recommended.

Good Luck.

Hi. Venezia is cool and reasonable to reach by plane, the others are better by train, otherwise impossible to get there quickly. In Venezia better to stay "on the continent", it is easy to get to the island in the mourning. Ask me more.
By the way I am also going to Italy in December or in January, then need to stay for exams till 09. February.
