I've really been wanting to go to Amsterdam for some time, so I was wondering if any one was going there for a short weekend next year, in either February or March, and if anyone can give me some tips on what hotels I can book.

Keep me posted, I would be interested too. Not before March though, the weather will likely be shit until then.

There's an Ibis next to the train station.. About as convenient as it gets.
Don't drive. If you do, leave you car somewhere such as Schiphol long-term parking and take the train. Parking in the city is very dear.

You should indeed not bring your car or do as Richard advices.
I lived in Amsterdam so could give you advice on what to see and which hotel to book or not. The Ibis at the trainstation might be comfortable but looks horrible. Check booking.com for hotels and I can advice you if it's within walking distance of the things that matter. Some hotels say to be located in Amsterdam or 15min from but actually aint. They just fall under the Amsterdam area but can be over 30 min from the centre and not in the nicest area (Amsterdam Zuid-Oost / South East).

I lived 5 minutes walking from there next to the Dutch national bank. I like to keep an eye on my money.

Hello D,
One of the best ways to stay in Amsterdam by B&B, my wife and I used Studio Ronja and its not too far from the Melkweg as well as the Risjkmuseum.
Price may be a little high but its so different from the classic hotels.
Also ge the IAMSTERDAM pass at Schipol Airport. %discount on restaurants, museums, boat trip and etc..
enjoy

I had a great stay at the Park Hotel in Amsterdam www.parkhotel.nl It was a really comfortable hotel in a really convenient location for shopping, dining, entertainment - near Leidesplein and Vondel Park.
Plan to go back to Amsterdam in the late Spring and will definitely re-book at the Park Hotel.
