Trips for next few weekends

Hi,

I'm new in Geneva (and Swiss). Coming from US for couple of months for work. I'd like to travel on weekends to different cities and european countries to see some of the top attractions and natural beauties.

I'm wondering if there are others like me who'd be interested joining so we can group up and travel around?

best,

AsiF

Italy is a pretty big place.  Where you thinking?  I lived in Milan for a few years and while it has a fantastic Duomo (Catherdral) I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. The lakes are great, but weather recently has been awful so not so attractive.  Let me know where in Italy your thinking and might be able to help out.

Make sure you hit Basel on your travels.  Its 3 country border position in the central of Europe gives it a unique feel with lots to see and do.  Lots of walks available or if you are that way inclined, I run people around the highlights on running tours.  See www.baselrunningtours.com if you are interested (if you are a runner then worth knowing that running tours exsit in some Italian cities also).

Wherever you go, have fun

South is a good idea.

Napoli is my favorite place in Italy.  Chaotic but a real lived in city.  And it has beach if you were looking for the mix.  Otherwise a beach slightly off the beaten track is Paestum.  Fairly unknown but has lovely beach and has best example of Greek temples in the world (yeah, including in Greece). Dating from approx 200bc if I remember rightly (no, not just a nerd who knows these things but I got married there...)

I think Venice is amazing. Not cheap but well worth a visit.

Bit off topic but.... I took my parents there for first visit to Italy and they loved it.Even found a betting shop for my dad as it was grand national weekend. Can you believe because the shop's betting systems could only cater for 30 horses they just ignored numbers 31-40 in the race!  One of these came 2nd so they just paid our to 5th place.... Nice place though...

I know I should just look on a weather website, but....has the weather been bad everywhere in Europe or just in Switzerland area?  How is Germany?

I really need/want some outdoor activity, but I keep saying "the weather will be better in a few days, I'm sure."

Also, I assume the weather has been lousy in the Swiss mountains, too, yes?  It's not possible they are "above" the weather, I don't think (though I have seen it happen in California)

Hi @ all,

"Italy sounds good however Venice comes to mind when I think about Italy where I haven't been yet...thougts?

Morocco is also good but it might a bit far for a weekend trip?"

I thought more about flying to Bari (I think there is an easy jet flight from Basel or a cheap from ZH) and then to go to Monopoli / Puglia. An alternative would be Sicilia. I have already been to Venice...and agree with Joseph, as I also really miss warm weather and the ocean. I would be also in for Spain, Greece or Croatia. But I think people participating would need to take 1 or 2 days off so we would have a long weekend.

Marakkesh is easy to reach via flights which do not take tooooo long.

Be careful though. That Icelandic volcano is behaving badly again so if you plan to go somewhere in the next couple of weeks maybe it would be better to take the train

I am definitely up for a trip to Italy and/or Spain.....Morraco would be great to see as well.  In Italy - I was looking into the Cirque Terre region on the coast.  I'm a coastal person myself and it looks beautiful.  More specifically there is a town in the Cirque Terre region called Monterosso al Mare. Check it out if y'all get some time.  This will be my first visit to Europe and I'm really looking forward to meeting some good people and doing some traveling.

I heard Italy's weather was as bad as Switzerland's (though warmer).  Hard to imagine that will keep up.

But maybe the better thing to do is take a sauna and wait for spring to actually come to Switzerland!!

Smile

Another cool town near the Cinque Terre is Camogli.  It's still a fishing village.  Easy train ride to either end of the CT. I love the Cinque Terre and I highly recommend it, provided you plan to do the walk.  Unless of course you have a yacht in Portofino.  Then please do invite me.  I will bring the champagne (though I prefer italian white wine).  Smile

Hey guys,

I just arrived in Geneva as well, and provided things aren't too pricey, would love to join you all! Any interest in going to a few of the nearby villages as well? I hear they're adorable!

Best,

Joanna

I totally agree. Weather predictions aren't really precise nowadays especially in this region plus the volcanic eruptions aren't if favor of air travel. A couple of days ago I found out about easyjests airline and the prices are OMG but again it's risky as one of my colleague who was supposed to return from Scotland this morning is stuck there... best bet is to probably rent a car and drive which could be much cheaper then train if 3-4 people are traveling. For bigger groups, I guess mini Van or full size van can be rented..

HI All,

I would love to join in on any road trips/flights/trains people are taking on weekends. I've been in Geneva three months, but with the apartment hunt, moving and getting settled in at work I haven't had the chance to do much travel.

Thanks,

La Neice
