The cheapest way is either by feet or hitch hiking...

Some economic ways are train (from Zurich), Flybaboo and Swiss flights.

Hi, I am going to vienna on the 27th till july 6, we found the cheapest way was to take a train to Zurich and fly from there.. I have never been to Vienna, so I am very interested if anyone has any suggestions on what to do, where to go.. 5 weeks will be a long time if I am bored!

Hi Lexillent,

Hofburg (winter palace) and the Schonbrunn (summer residence) in Vienna are worth a visit. You could also go to visit the Vienna Opera Houses, St Stephen Cathedral, Rathaus, Reisenrad in Prater, Sisi Museum and the United Nations office, and Sacher Hotel to try the Sachertorte (dry chocholate cake with apricot jam) which is world famous.

If you have time drive to Salzburg - Mozart birthplace, a very nice city. Lots of thing to see there and it's the only place you can get the "Salzburger Nockerln"!! (a type of dessert) -:) Along the way you can stop and see the cities between Vienna and Salzburg like: Mondsee, Gmunden, BadIschl, Hallstatt...

Enjoy Vienna and Austria!

Cheers!

Hi Lexi

You can't be bored in Vienna. It is a wonderfull town with lots and lots of culture.

If you're into art, there is an excellent museum the university close to the "Sezession". This is another thing you should see, illustrated by Klimt and a jewel of the Belle Epoque. There are otherwise the other large museum and another small one which showed mainly stuff from Egon Schiele. I don't remeber wheteher it was a permanent exhibition. Further: Naturhistorisches Museum. And there is a nice large Moderna Art as well.

There is quite a unique way to go to the opera without booking tickets months ago. They sell a limited number of tickets every evening for a few euros. OK. Shitty places and you can't sit, just lean on a sort of wall, but really fun. I did not like the opera though... Other places are Burgtheater and especially Theater am Neumarkt. You should be fluent in German though.

Lots of cool lounge like places are spread along the city. As well as good clubs. Oh yes, go and habve a real Wienerschnitzel at the "Figgelmüller" or something. It is one the original old places in the town centre. They sell only Wienerschnitzela and Knödel I think. There is a lot of culinary influence in the kitchen from the Balkan anyway. Try Palatschinken. It is crèpes.

I doubt you will be bored. I would join you anytime if I could.

Have fun.

Hi!

I hate it! ha, the city is cool... lots of museums and such, but museums get old after a few days.. I loved the Zoo.. saw a giant panda, made my day =)

I wont eat anything.. the food here scares me.  And I am not finding it to be a very lively nightime city.. I also have not found austrians to be very friendly towards me.  Tonight I will go to the casino.. wish me luck =)

Hey,

quartier 21 is where the young artists work and hang out. Interesting museum of modern art, and you'll find lots of flyers and announcements of artsy and hip parties and events.

The Zentralfriedhof, the main cemetery, is very impressive. Make sure you walk thourgh the old Jewish part.

In Vienna, you must get the classic Kaffeehaus ("coffe house", but this particular style is something unique to Vienna) experience at least once. I found the "Kaffeehaus Sperl" great.

Sorry, don#t have the addresses of these places handy, but they are very well known.

Hope your experience will improve. Vienna is my favorite European city so far.
