What should I buy in America because it is cheap?

So. I have to go to the US next week, and people keep saying things like "you should do some shopping where it's cheap". So, OK, what's cheap? Clothes? Shoes? Technology (yeah, voltage blah blah)? Bourbon?

Customs? What can't i do? Are there any important tricks? I mean, more complicated than throw away the boxes and smear a bit of mud on the knees?

What would you buy if you were me? If you don't know me, you can either guess what I would like, or tell me what you would buy if you were you.

Where is good shopping in Washington D.C.?

What's the next big thing in America that hasn't made it over here yet but will in like eighteen months or so and if I get one now I'll totally be the coolest cat in the alley?

Gee whiz, Marina, I don't know what things are like in Mexico but here in Europe I think you'll find things move a little faster than that. The Clash, FFS.

Oh, crap, I thought you just made that up, but no, they are real. That makes the world ever so slightly more disappointing.

I need clothes, shoes and bags! In fact I need to buy at least one bag before I go. That's wrong, isn't it?

I knew you liked the classics becuase you mentioned something about Sisyphus on a thread about science; just dropping it in there as though the guy had just won Pop Idol or something. What I didn't know was that the classical period extended until circa 1980...

Near enough is good enough...

:-) I'd wait and buy it in the US. Especially that the sales are on now.

They have called me loud-mouthed (I'm not). They have called me noisey (I'm not). But I think this is the first time I have ever been explicitly called noise. But seriously, you don't have to. Just tell me what size you are; the shoes are yours.

You must have a bowl Pho of soup. You simply can't get a decent bowl anywhere in Geneva, or anywhere else outside Vietnam for that matter. No need to transport it and no hassels at customs. Apart from that bandaids (plasters), duct tape are among my usual staples. Try Tysons corner center in Northern Virginia if you want a "mall" shopping experience. Enjoy.

Oh, I tried the fire crackers accidentally when bringing a Marmite back at Thanksgiving, they caught on to that one I have to say. But food is generally my shopping vice there. Blueberry muffins.......... Yum. Or pho thai, my favourite.

If you are in Washington DC directly, then you can find most of what you want in Georgetown area.  If you have a vehicle, Tyson's Corner in Virginia is loading with shopping (a couple of big malls right there).

Just got back from DC this morning!!!  Enjoy.  We brought back a fair amount of clothing - yes, much cheaper.  If you are a Mac guy, an IPOD and a MacBook are on the order of 20% cheaper there.

I don't know you.  We just moved here from the west coast and here are some of the things people have told us to bring because they are so much more expensive here.

Underwear, socks, Brooks Brothers makes no iron shirts that you wash and put in the dryer and they come out very nice so you can save on laundry bills.  They are your standard button down ozford style or dress shirt.   Peanut butter.    Those are the things that people living here told us to bring a lot of.

Tyson Corner is a must.   They have Nieman Marcus , Bloomingdale's and Nordtrom all high end department stores.   Neman's has expensive and trendy clothes for men which will be really discounted now.   I haven't found the shopping in Georgetown to be that great.  I would say if you only have a short time to go shopping, go to Tyson's Corner.   Not sure if you are into organic or natural products but if you are a trip to Whole Foods Market is a must.   It is one stop shopping for that sort of thing,  vitamins, natural remedies,  The Bach Flower essences are much cheaper there than here, natural sugar alternatives and cleaning supplies.

If you can't make it out to Tyson's Corner there is another Neiman Marcus at Friendship Heights I think.  It is easy to get to on the Metro.   I also think there is an Apple store near there too.

i have found in the few weeks I have been here that almost everything is alot cheaper in the states than in Geneva.

If you are looking for some good restaurants there, check out the website  Open Table.com.  You can make reservations online and look at restaurants menus on their websites and locate them via area.   Very useful tool.

Good Luck and Have fun!    DC is a great city.   Check out the Christmas decorations at the main train station near the Capitol.

Happy New Year!

Drugs.  The legal kind, of course.

The most basic stuff (like Tylenol/paracetemol) that runs $10 per 200 in the US costs $6 per 20 here.
