Luca got his certification in Lake Geneva a few winters ago (brrrrrr!) but it was through the CERN diving club.

He prefers the French diving system because it gives you more independence, and he feels that the quality is better (in terms of the general knowledge and diving skills gained). He did his French-to-PADI certification with Jerome Chevalier ([email protected]), a PADI instructor working with Pole Sub (www.polesub.com), a shop in Annemasse that offers courses.

Like Julian, he has been diving in Sharm el Sheikh, as well as Soma Bay. He personally thinks that you'd be better off getting certified here so that you can spend all your time diving and seeing the wonderful things in the Red Sea.

Have fun,
Christi

Sorry, I've never been to Caledonia. I don't think it belongs to the best diving spots in the world, which are, to me, Bahamas, Micronesia, Maldives, Australia, Red Sea, Galapagos and Mexico.

Sharm has, to me, better snorkling and diving spots than Urgada, where most diving activities include long (and after a couple of days boring) full days out on very slow boats. Urgadha is packed with divers, as Le Louvre would be on sundays. Sharm maybe a bit less. I've done one of my best dive ever there: anyone been on the Thistlegorm ? :-)

I would, as every one else, advise you to get certified in Switzerland before leaving. It will be more expensive, but do you prefer waisting your time learning how to clear your mask surrounded swiming pool tiles, or a school of white tip sharks ? ;-)
I'm not kidding, I've seen once a lady holding her regulator in her mouth while diving. You could so much see she was too scared to enjoy anything around her. A real shame. Don't be one of those "I'v done my OWD 5 years ago and can't recall anything" diver, please.

I've been diving and certified with the British Sub Aqua Club and PADI. I would quite easily agree that BSAC and CMAS give more serious training. But PADI is just the most common one. Choosing another certification is like going for Linux instead of Windows. Sensible, maybe ethically better, but possibly very anoying and costy sometimes.

In any case, what matters is YOU and your BUDDY. Stick to those rules:
- never dive alone
- do your buddy check seriously
- stop, assess, control in case of trouble

and you'll be fine, wherever, whenever. And it's an under ice diving survivor speaking here :-P

I have heard a lot of good things about new caledonia, and I dont know whether its good or bad, but since a lot of people haven't been there its hard to get the word of mouth that you get about hurghada. The reason why I wanted to do PADI is for the reason you gave; its more well known, and I just thought it would be easier to have a standard certification that everyone would certainly recognize. Anyway, where would you put mac in there? I don't use linux or windows ;d Thanks for the tips. Actually I'm not sure it will be much more expensive to get my PADI here, I've had an offer for 650 sfr + manual, and what I've found in egypt was around 350 euro + hotel + flights etc, ending up costing me a lot more than doing it here, plus like others said, if I do it here, I will be more free to enjoy my holidays. Plus, Francois (my husband) won't have ot take time off and waste time while I am getting certified when we could be diving. I'll check out the dive school you linked me to -- thanks!

Hi,

Hope I'm not too late ...

I went diving with Aquarius Diving Club south of Marsa Alam last year, and totally recommend it. The camp is great, with an out of nowhere feeling between the sea and the desert. There are still lots of big fish because not many boats make it that far South, and a spot like Elphinstone was an amazing dive. It is easy to get to as you can get a direct flight from Geneva to Hurghada from where they will pick you up. I can't wait to go back, it is perfect for just 1 week holidays. I think they only do PADI certifications, but you can check, all the details are on the website below:
http://www.aquariusredsea.com/DivingCenters/DstCnts.aspx?Dst=3&Cnt=5&Itm=41

I also went to Dahab, north of Sharm, but don't recommend it - too many boats on the water for me.

Also, if you find good tips for New Caledonia, please let me know, I am planning to go there in October.

Enjoy,
Fabienne
