I have to fix my holidays 3/4 weeks. The period would be from mid october on. Any suggestion? Apparently south america is still cold, central america possibility of bad weather too (huragans.. what a travel agency told me), and asia moonsoon season...
My idea is backpacking somewhere.... Thank you very much for any advice!

Peak Season
The high tourist season is July and August and the weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year's, when prices are higher and tourist traffic is considerably increased. Try to avoid these times as well as February and March (given the increased heat and humidity).
Climate
Bali is just below the equator (so days are a consistent 12 hr.), and the temperatures always hover in the 80s Fahrenheit (upper 20s to low 30s Celsius). The rainy season lasts from October to April; rain usually comes in short, violent bursts that last an hour or so, and the humidity is at its crushing worst during this period. The hottest months are February, March, and April; remember that it gets a bit nippy at night up in the mountains, but a light sweater will certainly be enough.
Public Holidays
Public holidays are New Year's Day (Jan 1), Idul Fitri (celebration of the end of Ramadan, in late Feb), Nyepi (a major purification ritual and a time when Balinese are supposed to sit at home, silent, in late Mar), Good Friday and Easter Sunday (late Mar/early Apr), Muslim New Year (mid-May), Indonesia Independence Day (Aug 17), Ascension Day of Mohammed (early Dec), and Christmas (Dec 25).

Hi there
There really are LOADS of places to go in October time frame which is fab! Many of the countries are experiencing different weather systems this year (I have been travelling from caribbean to asia for seven months now) often around a month later than normal years, so take 'general weather systems' advice with a bit of caution as you may get different weather than they suggest normally.
I would suggest looking on the internet at Exodus. The company organise excellent trips, especially if you are thinking of travelling on your own. The people you meet are generally adventurous, interesting and diverse. You can share or pay single supplement. There have a search function for times of the year and types of activities etc.
You can request prices for the holiday from the 'ground' starting point and arrange your own flights. They generally organise flights from the UK (or you can fly to the UK first and take their flight suggestions as they get good prices).

Hi, thank you very much to all for your suggestions!
Very helpful was the web site of exdodus, where I could find infos and ideas for my itinerary; together with a guidebook I am organising/overviewing my trip. I will buy the flight only, the rest once get there.
I will start from Bangalore area probabily, then down to the south.(Karnataka, Kerala , maybe Goa, Tamil Nadu)
If you have some more suggestions about some "must" or places to avoid or nice hotels to stay, massages , are very welcome!
Thank you!!

Make sure you don't eat raw salads, only drink bottled water which you open yourself and no ice even how hot it is. Five-star hotels are no exception. You may want to bring water purification pills with you if you're backpacking in the rough.
