he's Mr. Networks, at least in Rome as I understand, and perhaps he knows people who knows people in Florence that you might be able to meet up with. Good luck and have great time!

My friends in Tuscany inform me of rain and more rain these days... hope the days you visit are greeted with sunshine. On clear days, there is a lot to see in and around Florence. Here are some suggestions
The Duomo and area around it. Many bars and cafes there. Sip Italian coffee (the best coffee in the world) and watch the world go by, read faces, hear pigeons cooooo! If resting in the midst of noisy traffic and streets isn't your thing, walk over to Piazza della Signoria. It has numerous statues such as that of Neptune, and a copy of David. Then walk over to Ponte Vecchio - the old bridge over river Arno. It has history, a view that is worth savoring at sunset.
If you love Michaelangelo's genius, a visit to Accademia is worthwhile. But do make reservations for your visit to Accademia; make the reservation soon after you arrive. Else you will wait a long time in lines to get in.
Hike to Piazzale Michelangelo. You can also take public transportation or taxi. The Tuscan homes and gardens along the way are nice. When you reach the Piazza, you are rewarded with beautiful views of Florence.
Take a bus or taxi to Fiesole. This a small town 45 minutes from Florence city center (traffic permitting). Beautiful views all the way, nice looking villas, olive gardens, cyprus trees... makes you want to settle in Toscana. Once you reach Fiesole, you can enjoy the town and the views towards Florence. If you have more time, there are numerous side trips to consider - Siena, Pisa, Lucca, etc.
For social life, there are bars and clubs along the river. Via Alfani (Cardillac Cafe) is another option.
If it is raining, try the various art museums... awesome collection of the great masters. Or consider wine tasting. Limitless things to do indeed.

I am italian and love italian food and wines! Of course! A very good trattoria in Florence is called "Palle d'oro", via S. Antonino , not expensive, nice and friendly atmosphre... very good! a second one is called Trattoria "Antellesi" in Via Faenza also very good!! I'll check at home for a couple of more place where I have been.
