We went for our honeymoon to maldives and stayed on veligandu islands which was amazing. There is a large range of prices depending on what you are looking for. We didn't want something too too posh, an island with just the resort, more seafood served, not to have to worry about money during the trip, and a hut in the water. This is the website www.veliganduisland.com

I stayed at the Eden (Beruwela Beach) in Spring 2003 and it was great - I've been all over the world and I've never had such good service. We travelled with Kuoni and the rep was fantastic - because we were a group of 16 he talked us through all of the usual excursions etc they offer and tailored everything just for us so we got to the Elephant Orphanage before the crowds arrived, had a guided tour of a gemstone polishing workshop and all the other touristy stuff. One word of warning - we all loved the Elephant Orphanage but a friend went to SL last year with a different operator and they'd dropped it from their excursion list after complaints from guests. To be fair, it was very crowded and a bit disorganised but it's post-tsunami Sri Lanka, not DisneyWorld. If you're in the southwest corner, don't be tempted to take a day trip any further than the Elephant Orphanage or Colombo. The distances look small but the roads are dreadful and it's very slow going. If you want to do Kandy and the old tea plantations in the centre book a tour or a car and driver and then head to the south west coast for a few days R&R. Enjoy.

Hi there!
I'm a little bit late but I wanted to add my contribution!
A wonderful way to discover the Maldives is to do a cruise. As you may know, the Maldives are made of lots of small islands. With a boat, you are not stuck on one.
We were 12 (many divers but not only) on a small boat and it was magic! We went on desert islands and in fishermen villages, we swam with big skates. And it is not that expensive, it was the same price as a week in a resort hotel.
Then i went to Sri Lanka for 2 weeks. We took a private driver for 2 weeks but we organized our own the trip. It was before the tsunami so I feared lots of things changed but I really recommend you to go to Kandy and to the tea plantations in the mountain.
Enjoy your trip anyway !

Went there for our honeymoon last Sep, and loved every minute of it. Pretty inexpensive also (well, compared to places like the hilton)
