We found a Nachmieter, with references, permanent job, decent salary, no debt, Betreibungsauszug etc... and the letting agent said they were "unacceptable". When asked why, they said it was because the person is Indian. Asked why it is unacceptable to be Indian, the reply was "because they do not cook like we do".
Clearly, this is bang out of order. Is there anything I can do about this? The HEV were not at all interested.

These disputes wind up at the Schlichtungsbehörde, and they have their own legal advice department:

I would guess that Indian cooking is not grounds for not accepting a Nachmieter,

So in theory, you would owe the landlord rent only until the Nachmieter is willing to take the apartment.
I'd try reasoning with the landlord once more after having recieved some professional advice.
If not, you could not pay, and wait for the "Betreibung". You then wouldthen have to contest the "Betreibung" which would lead to coutr ruling. Never done this so maybe someone else knows the process better.
But the essence of my post is "Schlichtungsbehörde" :-)

Although I do not think Indian cooking is a valid excuse for not accepting someone, I could figure some of the reasons behind it… Curry smell is very penetrating for those not use to it. Let alone curry smell on a daily basis…

Just look for possible Judicial assistance through the Association for Tenant's and Cinsumers Defense in Zurich equivalent as one called ASSLOCA we have in French Speaking Switzerland but if you have no witness and/or no written document reporting what you state it will be TOUGH to prove.Good luck!
